About

The Alchemy of Felt and Color

The equation for felt is simple: wool fibers + agitation = felt (moisture, heat and soap can all speed the process along).

Elemental. Tactile. Felting requires no structural techniques like spinning, weaving or knitting, only wool and an understanding of how to manipulate it.

The key is microscopic, hidden in the structure of the wool itself. The shaft of each individual fiber is covered in tiny overlapping scales, like shingles on a roof. Heat, moisture, and the alkalinity of soap can help to open the tiny scales outward. As the fibers are agitated, they slide together easily in one direction, lubricated by water and soap. But once fibers have begun to tangle, the open scales prevent them from untangling, thereby locking the fibers together. The only possible direction of travel leads to more entanglement, and eventually, felt.

All very logical and scientific. Yet I swear that every time I transform a fluffy pile of wool into dense, strong, dimensional felt it still seems like magic!

I studied fibers in the art department at university, but it was actually my family’s hobby of raising colored sheep that led me to felt-making. The daughter of botanists, using natural dyes nourishes my love of growing, gardening, plants.

Together, felting and natural dyes offer me a balance between planning, testing, researching, and the alchemy of the unexpected. By nature each piece is unique, handmade. There is enough natural variation, in each individual sheep’s fleece, each batch of dyed wool, each new dye source and each new idea, to produce unending experimentation.

Additional policies and FAQs
Please be aware that natural dyes can be more prone to fading than synthetic dyes, and they will definitely fade if left in bright or direct sunlight. It is normal for the color to change or lighten with use.
