This stunning unique piece of art took my breath away and has far exceeded my expectations. Mark drew out the beautiful grain and ,by incorporating the bark into the trim, retained the character of the hawthorn tree in the sculpture. As it tealight it is both beautiful and practical. When I shared with Mark that I was looking for an engagement present for an artist friend, also very inspired by nature, he so thoughtfully created a beautiful small dish for her rings and gift wrapped both. Thank you Mark! I look forward to seeing your future creations.

    About

    Hand crafted from Somerset

    My love of wood:
I mostly work with hand tools, but allow some machines to lighten the load such as timber processing, hand tools leave crisp edges, planning & cabinet scrapers give a finish that’s hard to beat: Working with these tools stimulates the senses; the peace & quiet allows you to feel more part of the process, your sight reads the grain seeing what’s required for the wood to conform, the feel & sound from the sharp honed tools working the wood tells you much more about the process in hand.
Watching an object emanate from the raw material gives satisfaction that I’ve been unable to emulate with a machine; whilst in either instance the scent from woods such as pine, mahogany, Oak & fruit woods are always a wonder in the workshop.
I have a varied interest in styles and design from old to modern forms, my real pleasure is within the styles of Arts & crafts, Country style, Shaker & Deco; whilst individual with their own merits they share simplicity, strength, functionality, longevity with a style that bridges time in peoples tastes and appreciation.

    Turning:
I acquired the lathe initially to produce shaped legs and feet for my furniture. I was warned about lathes and turning! Within a week, I had succumbed to its defining whisper enticing me to experiment and turn more.
My turning now produces Bowls, Platters, Pens, Honey dippers, Lidded boxes, Garden dibbers, Tool handles, Door Handles, Gavels, Mallets, Decorative finials, clocks and other ornamental pieces: I’m hooked!

Each item takes time to create, each have unique qualities from the wood’s colour and grain to the shape and design that comes off the tool and the finish applied. Carefully sourced timber from exotic hardwoods to our locally sourced native species all are made with personal care and attention for your enjoyment.

“Whilst we are fortunate to have craftsmen alive with inherited skills, take advantage of the magic of the artisan either as producer or buyer; carry their knowledge with you into the future so that others may benefit and skills are not lost to progress and fashion." (Mark Miller 2017)
