This Scotsman is perfection -- from the top of his cashmere tam, to his little lace-up boots! His hand-embroidered face is exquisite, and every tiny pleat of his tartan kilt is precise. Love how Mimi contrasts that traditional Scottish look with his slightly edgy tattooed chest. (There is a sense of fun and humor in Mimi's work too!) I could go and on about this guy -- his slender, embroidered fingers; his striped shorts beneath his kilt -- and even two perfectly little hand-stitched ears! This is my third art doll from Mimi, and I can't wait to add the fourth. She also happens to be wonderful to work with, packages her people nicely, and ships super fast. You need one -- or more -- of these gorgeous soft sculptures in your home. You will be thrilled!

Great pattern - I enjoyed making it
Using Reclaimed Fabrics To Make New Friends
I have an amazing job. I've been a maker all my life and the internet has made it possible to show my work to the world.
I remember that when I went for my interview at Art School, I was asked what I'd like to be doing in 10 years. I replied that I would like to have a little shop where I could sell all the things I'd made. When Etsy came on the scene, so many years later, I was able to fulfill that dream! I opened my shop in 2006 and have been a happy shop keeper ever since.
I work out of my house in Arlington, Massachusetts which is a suburb of Boston. My favorite materials are what I refer to as rescued fabrics- that is fabric that would otherwise become part of the waste stream. The fabrics I prefer come from reclaimed clothing, damaged yard goods, fabric remnants, and someone's un-loved stash. I combine those fabrics with new 100% wool felt and special new fabrics to bring my fabric creations to life. I am always on the hunt for inspiring colors and patterns.
And a few other things about me-
I am one of the ten doll-makers profiled in Jenny Doh's book, We Make Dolls. I contributed 2 patterns for the book.
I am working with Land Of Nod on a line of dolls that will be coming out in October 2012.
Sometimes I come out of my studio and do craft markets. Check out my work in person at the Renegade Craft Markets in Brooklyn, San Francisco and Chicago.
Etsy did a Handmade Portrait of me in 2009 and you can see that here- http://www.etsy.com/storque/handmade-life/handmade-portraits-mimi-kirchner-4405/
I am a life-long artist with a passion for fine handwork and meticulous detail. I am creating a population of fabric art people and creatures to go out into the world. They are my imaginary friends, my dream children, me.
I am lucky enough to be part of the Handmade Portraits series here- http://www.etsy.com/storque/handmade-life/handmade-portraits-mimi-kirchner-4405/
