How I Added Color to my Life with MimiMade Designs
MimiMade Designs is a tie-dye clothing and accessories line for babies, kids and adults. The journey I made from corporate advertising in NYC to tie-dying in my studio in Stamford, CT took some detours, but I wouldn't have the business I have without the experiences that led me here.
I started tie-dying 10 years ago as a fun activity on summer weekends when my newborn was napping. Although I continued working in advertising for another five years and through a second child, I never stopped imagining how happy I would be to have a job where I could create and design works of art. When my third child was born, it was necessary to raise them as a stay-at-home mom. But that itch still needed to be scratched, so I started up again. Word of mouth spread and orders from friends began to come in. MimiMade Designs was born.
While I love traditional tie dye, I try to incorporate more design and fashion into my styles. Asymmetrical tunics and burnout shirts have been some of my biggest sellers. I only use high-quality cotton and brands that are respected in the marketplace. My dyes are color fast and therefore stay vibrant no matter how many times you wash the garment.
I was given the nickname Mimi 23 years ago by my then one-year old niece who couldn't say my whole name. Any time I would paint a picture or a piece of pottery, I would sign it Mimi Made (as in Made by Mimi). When I had to pick a name for my business, there was no better name to represent who I am.
