Love the handcrafted wool, the colors, the beauty of the craftmanship!
Felt was used long ago for clothing, the inside of sandals, under saddles and to cover huts. Today "felting" has gained favor as an artform all its own.
Although time consuming and sometimes physically demanding I love felting's spontaneous and experimental nature. It often leads to very interesting and unexpected results.
Felting has few rules and few creative limits. You can work flat, with just wool, or work using the "nuno" method which incorporates wool into loosely woven cloth like gauze or silk. I'm particularly fond of making three dimentional "pots". My vessels are made with several layers of wool over a deflatable ball.
All three methods mentioned above are "wet" processes. They involve wetting the wool with soapy water and then rolling, rubbing, throwing and sometimes steaming. With solid wool items soapy water, heat and friction make the fibers bond to each other. When creating nuno objects they make wool fibers permeate cloth and lock on the reverse side.
Needle felting (dry) involves using a special barbed needle to push wool fibers through a base cloth or prior wet felted surface. I often combine wet and dry felting.
Merino wool roving and yarns come in gorgeous colors and textures. Projects can be further embellished with beads, buttons and feathers.
Thank you for stopping by. I hope you will check back often to see my new works.
