A potter and a novelist. Pots on Etsy, books on Amazon...

Hi, everyone. I’m both a potter and a novelist (you can see my books on Amazon.com, most recently “A Dredging in Swann” from Blackstone Publishing, and before that, “Bhajan” and “Killer Whale Rock”). I write in the morning, and in the afternoon I work on ceramics, an old love. Recently, I have developed a unique look by layering six to eight glazes on each piece. This technique results in wonderful depth and plenty of unexpected beauty, making every kiln opening full of surprises. That’s why everything I offer is one of a kind, not part of a series of similar items, and also why it’s hard to buy a set of things from me. Everything’s beautiful though, so there’s that. Also, I don’t sign my pieces, but instead use a studio mark, the Mischievous Chicken, a figure drawn by Meher Baba. It’s a symbol of the soul itself, the mischievous little fellow that escaped the mother hen of infinite Being ages ago. (You can google all that if you’re interested.) Anyway, that’s a bit of my story. I live in Durham, NC with my wife, Cynthia, and dog, Blue, both excellent companions. We live in the woods with a creek behind our house. I built a cabin beside the creek and go down there in the morning to write. I sell my mugs for twenty-eight bucks, sometimes less—with free shipping. That’s fairly cheap, considering the time it takes to make one. But it’s enough to buy more clay and a few groceries too, which Cynthia appreciates.

I grew up in Arizona, then the Alaskan wilderness, where we lived with whales in the front yard and bears in the backyard. Now I live beside a creek outside Durham, North Carolina, with my wife, Cynthia, and dog, Blue, both excellent companions.
