A little background to how Miss Happ was born..
I started working and designing the Miss Happ range for a local competition where entrants around South Africa submitted a small range on storyboard, and later in sample format. My range was one of 6 semi-finalists selected (out of 85 entrants!). Unfortunately, I didn’t go on to be placed but by me putting my passion and ideas onto paper it the start of something unique and exciting for me.
In January 2009 I launched the Rockabilly & pinup inspired fashion label called "Miss Happ". The Miss Happ range of clothing has been designed to celebrate womanly curves and to cater to a woman's independent spirit with timeless vintage inspired styles at affordable prices.
The Miss Happ range has now branched out into a pinup & Rockabilly inspired accessory range that compliments our clothing range. The range offered includes hair accessories, necklaces, broaches, hair clips, and hair flowers. I also do a small collection of cushions and coffee table coasters for the home.
**********INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE NAME**********
The name Miss Happ was originally spelt “Miss Hap” – with one “p” at the end, and is the name of the oldest flying B-25 Mitchell bomber in the world. The Bomber was used during World War II by the American’s so it was the perfect name for my range especially as the whole Rockabilly/American Rock n’ Roll feel is very much where my range takes it’s major influence from – mine now has a double “p” at the end!
**********ABOUT THE DESIGNER**********
The pin-up culture is something that I have been passionate about for many years. The 1940’s and 1950’s have always been a huge influence in my life, from the clothes that I wear and love, to the vintage cars that I saw at my first car show when twelve years old. For me, Miss Happ is the perfect combination of all the things I love!
It has been almost five years since I started my little brand, Miss Happ, and I have gone through it all. The frustration of people not understanding what I am about, to CMT's and seamstresses letting me down terribly. I have had to tackle fit problems, and glue problems, our offices being broken into and all my computer equipment stolen. The stress of juggling not only my clothing brand but also lecturing part-time and having to do graphic design work to pay for my little dream which is Miss Happ.
At the end of it all I am proud to say that I am a self-funded, one woman show....how many people can say that?!
I have gone through the bad....but above all have gotten through it all and am still standing when so many others have had to shut their doors in this recession. I have had amazing support from my other half as well as my family and friends, and a huge shout of Thanks goes out to them!
I am always exploring new avenues of business and have identified a niche for my specific type of design that is close to my heart. The ultimate gratification come from acceptance by the mass public of my design concepts. When I showed the range for the first time at the 2009 Tattoo Convention in Cape Town it provided an excellent platform for the brand to be launched from, and with my consumers at my finger tips sales soared.
