Home is Where the heArt is
In 2010 I was living in San Francisco and when I finished school with my degree in Photography, I set my camera down and set a blanket up outside my apartment door on a very busy street with my feather earrings and wire wrapped necklaces. I made really good money really fast and realized that this might be a nice alternative to the crazy competition of trying to be a Photographer. I slowly over the next few years began to expand my knowledge of jewelry techniques through learning to work with metal. I took welding classes and worked on large scale art projects using steel and copper, I took blacksmithing and silversmithing classes. I traveled to Mexico to see silver mines and worked with a couple teachers while I traveled. These various experiences in working with different metals and mentors gave me a more creative outlook on what I can do with my hands, and that the possibilities in the arts are truly endless. I believed in keeping the craft of handmade jewelry alive and keeping this true became my passion.
I moved to Oakland and was deeply inspired by the industrial and metal arts community, and knew that I had to work with metal. I set up a small studio in my bedroom and started producing work which I would sell at the First Friday Art Walk in Oakland and to my surprise the public and my community were incredibly supportive and my jewelry was a huge success. I continued to vend where I could and fell in love with the process of setting up displays and showing off my work face to face with local folks. The conversations and connections were so fulfilling and the work was even paying my bills.
After a year of this work, I realized that my heart was not in the city, and even though I was developing a buisness there, I wanted to be back in the mountains. My mom and dad own 5 beautiful acres and the land is the land that I grew up on. I was called to come back home to support my family and help them steward the land and tend the garden, bring back a farm and help raise my niece. Knowing that I was risking a drop in sales and a setback in my buisness because I was leaving my community and city behind, and moving to a rural, small town I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to move back home.
My folks offered their garage to me as a place to build a studio, and I got a kitten, baby chicks and a beautiful garden to take care of.
I have deep gratitude for my lifestyle and my strength to choose how and where I want to live my life. For now, my home is where my heArt is and I am fueled by the support of my family to keep creating my art, dreaming big and moving towards what I love to do.
