I can do that!
The idea for Merls began in the summer of 2011 when I was writing curriculum for my former school district. I would have used any excuse not to write, edit, or reword the documents. At the time, I was into using premade rubber stamps to create notecards and stationary, but I couldn't always find the image I was looking for. I thought back to an art class I had taken in school, where we carved linoleum blocks. I knew that if I couldn't find what I wanted, then I could make what I wanted. I began wandering around the craft store and stumbled upon linoleum blocks, rubber, ink, and a brayer. Needless to say, I spent most of my curriculum money that summer on stamping and printing supplies.
With those supplies, I created countless stamps and stationary pieces for my friends and family. Seeing my idea come to life in print was an awesome feeling. I liked that the prints weren't 'perfect' and that each one was slightly different from the next depending on the amount of ink or pressure I used.
Recently I created my own save the dates for my wedding. Again, each card was different and unique. Yet the final look was exacfly what I wanted.
Merls is the name a friend of mine called me once. A shortened version of my last name that no one had ever called me before. From there I used the name in my classroom. Whenever hosting a 'show' or participating in a game, Miss Merls came. She kinda became my alter ego. As Miss Merls I could be totally a silly and creative, and it was ok because it wasn't Miss Merlino... it was Miss Merls.
And that's why there can be no other name for this company other than Merls. Here I can be as silly and as creative as I want, and no one can tell me no.
