Dye Hard!

MokoshFiber was founded by me, Noelle Leone. I started my shop to share my love of fiber and natural dyes.

Mokosh is the name of an ancient pagan goddess, possibly of Finnic origin, who walked at night spinning wool and to whom one might pray for help with spinning. I named my shop after this goddess to show my respect and fascination for the innate ingenuity and fiber artistry of women through history.

My skills are homesteading ones that I have learned on many small sustainable family operated farms. This background has influenced me very much, especially in how I operate MokoshFiber. I source fiber from small family farms with humane livestock management practices. I practice natural dyeing, an alternative method of dyeing that connects me with my landscape, my love of plants, and provides endless experimentation. Using supplies that are environmentally conscious is fabulous because it not only reduces my impact on the environment but it also connects me to nature, sends me to a different time, and makes me feel like some kind of crazy alchemist-wizard, which for me, creates a meaningful experience and a meaningful item.

I hope to expand MokoshFiber in the coming years to produce beautiful yarn, garments, home decor, natural dye plant seeds, and DIY fiber art kits. Follow mokoshfiber on etsy and instagram to see how it goes! Thank you for looking at my shop!

I love fiber. I live in Modesto, CA. One day I hope to have my own farm where I could raise fiber animals, grow vegetables and fruit trees, and have a garden dedicated to dye plants.

Hello and welcome to my Etsy store!

My name is Noelle and I operate MokoshFiber in my apartment/studio on the beautiful California Coast in Pacifica. Conscious practices are very important to me so I source the fiber from small farms located in the California bay area. I wash all the fiber with mild natural soap. I only mordant with alum and cream of tartar (the safest mordant, in my opinion). I grow natural dye plants, forage responsibly on hikes and walks and buy some of the more exotic ones online. All fiber products are made in a smoke free environment. I do have a cat but I keep all fiber out of her reach.

Using natural dyes and processing fiber by hand brings me much joy. It gives me a great piece of mind knowing that no chemical or harsh substance is being used and no gross byproducts are produced in the process either. I think that it makes a better yarn as well, ensuring that there will be no skin irritation from wearing a finished garment.
