About MommaOwlsMinis

Sales 1,225
On Etsy since 2019

As a sand-tray therapist and artist my goal is to share my talent for creating and finding unique minis, and make them affordable to every therapist.

I'm an artist by nature, and a mental health therapist by trade! I drew my first art piece at the tender age of 6 years old--to somewhat mediocre reviews (side note-my mom is a realist who loves me beyond measure-- but she did not want me to have an inflated sense of my ability, and for that I am eternally grateful). The artist/creator inside of me has never been a choice--it is as natural to me as the air I breathe. And while my 6 year old feelings were hurt for a little while, I was still determined to fulfill my destiny. Over the years I "dabbled" in the arts--drawing, sketching, painting--but never calling myself an artist. To me I "doodled." Just as I knew in my soul that art was a piece of me, I also knew that helping others was another part of who I am. I’ve been in the helping profession for the past 15 years, and a therapist for the past 8. As a mental health therapist working at a non-profit agency I learned quickly how to blend my art skills with my creation skills to make sand tray figures that I needed—not just for me, but for those I was serving. My first creation was a homemade guillotine out of a coat hanger. I’m happy to report that my skills have improved since then.
I became Momma Owl shortly after we adopted our 3 year old daughter. One day while at the grocery store with my wife and daughter we got separated. My wife told our daughter to call out for me fully expecting her to yell out “Momma,” but instead our daughter started yelling, “Hoo! Hoo!” to which I instinctively knew was her calling to me 2 aisles over so I “Hoo! Hoo!”’d back. She continued “hoo hoo”ing for me until we were reunited at which time she reaches out to hug me and looks up at me and says with the most sincere and gentle eyes “You’re my Momma Owl.” *cue the tears* My wife teared up right there in the middle of the cereal aisle—I felt the lump in my throat and the warmth in my soul—as I said back to her, “And you’re my Baby Owl.” **seriously this is not a children’s book—it really is our story**
Flash forward a few years to the summer of 2019 where all of the above story comes crashing together on the shores of Hawaii at a once-in-a-lifetime play therapy retreat hosted by our encouraging friend Jen Taylor. And of course—if you are going to have a play therapy retreat in Hawaii—you are going to have some kind of sand tray training on the beach! Instructions for the retreat were to bring 5-10 sand tray figures to use in the creation of your own sand tray. By this time I had been making “minis’ for a few years so I had several homemade figures that I took. My MO for mini making was to create those figures that I needed for my own sand tray work, or make figures that I needed for clients to do their own work but couldn’t find and/or afford. At the Hawaii retreat a few folks saw my minis and were fairly impressed—nothing overly dramatic, but definitely kind compliments—some of the minis were even used by my table mates during various activities which really made me feel good. By the end of the 5-day retreat I had given away most of my home made figures to various people as I intuitively felt that they might need or benefit from them. Before we headed home—as in right before we leave the lobby to catch our flight—Jen spends several minutes alone with my wife reconnecting, catching up, and planting the small seed of encouragement that my wife needed to hear about the need for my home made figures to be available to other therapists. She talked with her about an etsy store, some marketing ideas, etc. etc. My wife excitedly passed on the message to me, and that was as far as it went…until a week after returning to the main land my high dive pushing friend Jen Taylor puts my hand made figures on her FB page that reaches a couple thousand play and sand tray therapists requesting some encouragement from her followers to help her “shy artist friend” create an etsy store. I WAS SHOCKED—my wife was ecstatic—and a few short weeks later we launched our Etsy Store.

    Production Owl, Mommy

Our family journey of opening this shop started in 2013 when Alisha and I were dating. I knew right away that her talent needed to be shared with the world. As Production Owl my job is to make sure all orders are accurate and on time.

    100% Inspiration And Part Owner

Our owl family name came from me. One day while shopping we lost Momma Owl. I called out to her with a “hoo hoo.” Somehow Momma Owl knew it was me and responded with “hoo hoo,” even though she couldn’t see me! We’ve been an Owl Family since then.

Frequently asked questions
Do you allow refunds if I no longer want to wait for my order to be completed?

Effective 05.05.21 we are no longer able to accept refund requests after 7 days of purchase solely due to wait time issues. Unfortunately due to our production process, most orders have been started within 7 days of purchase; therefore, refund requests after 7 days will not be given. We are happy to cancel your order up to 7 days after your purchase. Refund requests after the 7 day time frame will not be granted. We are happy to offer a store credit if and when wait times are shorter.

It's been 10 weeks where is my order?

We understand that waiting for your order can be frustrating. Most orders are shipping within 12-16 weeks of their purchase date. We ask that you check your Etsy account or email to see if the ship by date has been updated before contacting us. If after 16 weeks you have not received your order feel free to email us, and we will be happy to assist you.

Oops! I accidentally ordered the wrong item. What can I do?

Simply email us through Etsy or our personal email mommaowlsminis@gmail.com with your updated order information, and we will be happy to make those changes.

I love your art pieces! And I really want to gift one to my friend/loved one, but need it faster than your currently production time. Can you help me pls?

We are honored that you have chosen one of our products to give as a gift! On occasion depending on what the ordered item is and our order que we are able to accommodate small orders for special occasions. Because we are unable to guarantee our production times an email by you is needed PRIOR TO PLACING YOUR ORDER to see if we can accommodate your need. We are no longer able to accept refund requests after 7 days of purchase solely because of wait time issues; therefore, in order to ensure that your shopping needs are met you will need to contact us via email PRIOR TO PLACING YOUR ORDER to receive confirmation that your order can ship in the timeframe you are requesting. We will do our best to meet you and your friend/loved ones needs!

Your shop policies state that there are no refunds/exchanges with custom orders. Aren't all of your handcrafted items considered custom orders? How do I get a refund or exchange if my item breaks or arrives broken?

While we do consider each of our handcrafted pieces custom orders, we will absolutely replace or repair any broken piece. As consumers ourselves, we recognize and value the investment you are making when you purchase one of our art pieces. We take great pride in creating our products using only industrial strength resin combined with superior quality paint. We are confident that our products will stand the test of time in durability and beauty. However, should one of our products break or arrive broken pls contact us via email at mommaowlsminis@gmail.com or Etsy so that we can replace or repair your piece. We stand by the quality of our products, and strive for customer satisfaction.

The shipment date on my order says 9-10 weeks, but your shop policy states a minimum of 4 months. Why are they conflicting?

Unfortunately Etsy only allows us to choose 9-10 weeks as the maximum amount of shipment time. However, due to our current demand and availability our ship times for most products in our store exceed that. If you ordered an item that says “WAITLIST” in the description the current wait time is a minimum of 4 months.
