About

Environmentally and Socially Responsible Handmade Knitwear

Momohana Kobo was founded in early 2010 and is based in a small home studio in Orange County, California. Everything is originally designed and hand-made by me. When it comes to fiber, we have enormous natural opportunities to support our planet’s biodiversity. I source yarns from environmentally and socially responsible sources, mostly from family owned companies/ farms or handmade artisans who share the same ethical principles as Momohana Kobo. Unlike mass-produced yarn, my yarn carries a story of its own with its unique personality, color, texture and weight.

Here are in-depth descriptions of the yarns that are used in Momohana Kobo.

✿CERTIFIED ORGANIC COTTON: Not only is the cotton grown without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, but it is processed organically— this includes the removal of dirt and wax in washing, the dying process, and the oils used in spinning cotton.

PLEASE NOTE that some yarn’s dying process is not done organically even though it is made from organic cotton. These yarns have been dyed in accordance with Oeko Tex Standard 100, which is globally tested and certified for the health and safety of textile products. If this is the kind of yarn that is used, it is mentioned in the listing description.

✿NATURAL COLORED ORGANIC COTTON: These cottons are bred to have colors, including beige, brown, and green. The cotton’s natural color doesn’t fade or bleed.

✿CERTIFIED ORGANIC WOOL: The wool is harvested from the sheep that are fed only organic grain and organic pasture forage. No synthetic hormones, vaccines, or genetic engineering are used. Just like organic cotton, the processing of the raw wool into yarn is also done organically.

✿HEMP: It is an ancient bast fiber that is strong and long wearing— the lifespan of hemp is the longest of all the natural fibers. Hemp breathes and works as natural isolators, which means it stays cooler in warm weather and warmer in cold weather. Hemp is highly resistant to ultraviolet light, which means it will not fade or disintegrate in sunlight. Indeed, it works as sun protection as hemp fiber absorbs up to 90% of UV radiation. Hemp doesn’t require pesticides and is easy to grow organically.

✿FAIR TRADE 100% YAK DOWN WOOL: This wool is from the company, Shokay who aims to source their yak fiber directly from Tibetan herders, enabling them to earn a sustainable living while reserving their traditional lifestyle. Like the cashmere of goats, yak hair is a secondary fiber, called down, grown each winter and shed in the spring. Each yak produces about 100g of fine downy fiber every year and this is how much weight of yarn I use to create one yak down beanie. The fiber is hand-combed from the yaks.

✿DARN GOOD YARNS: This small company is dedicated to helping women of India and Nepal become autonomous and self-reliant. They take manufactured waste, which would normally be sent to landfills, and repurpose it into artistic yarns. They selected 300 women in Nepal and India for their skill and offer them appropriate means to support their families by allowing these women to work from home.

- Thick and Thin Wool: 100% wool that is originally from New Zealand and handspun and dyed by women’s group in Nepal.

- Recycled Sari Ribbons: This upcycled yarn is created by women in co-ops who collect the remnants of sari silk fabric accumulated during the truing and trimming of the manufacturing process. I use this yarn for wrapping.

- 100% Banana Fibers: This sustainable yarn is made from the bark of a banana tree and handspun by women’s co-ops in India. I use this yarn for wrapping.

✿RECYCLED BLUE JEANS YARNS: 100% recycled yarn made from recycled blue jeans, made of 95% cotton and 5% other. It is 80% post consumer

✿VINTAGE COTTON YARN: This is 100% recycled yarn made of a blend of new recycled cotton from the garment industry, made of 75% cotton and 25% acrylic.

Here are the yarns that I don’t use and why.

✖︎CONVENTIONALLY FARMED COTTON: It is heavily dependent on pesticide and fertilizers and is most likely to be transported over long distances.

✖︎SYNTHETIC FIBER: A little more than half of global fiber production are synthetic fibers, known as polyester, nylon, and acrylic. They are all created from petroleum which is a kind of oil that comes from below the ground and we have a limited amount of it available to us on Earth. Also the heavy chemicals are used in the process of making fibers that have great potential for environmental pollution to the air and water.

PLEASE NOTE that some of my recycled/ upcycled yarns contain synthetic fibers, as they are disposed of from factories or other textile industries and are being repurposed to have a second life.
