Announcement   Monogatari is (originally) a Dutch clothing label inspired by mythology, (pre-)history , archaeology and fantasy.
I am also an archaeologist and goldsmith, I just enjoy working with my hands and I have always had an interest in other cultures, history and crafts. With your purchases you helped me finance my master project, that is about black-patinated alloys from the Eastern Mediterranean Bronze Age (3rd-2nd Mill BC). Currently I am looking for employment, and a PhD position to continue research on this topic.

Since I'm jobseeking, I'm currently taking a break from Etsy - I will still be making things but it may be some months before I list anything again (end of 2016?)

About

Clothing to (re-)create history

In 2006 I started with my own clothing label Monogatari, which was influenced by mythology, history and fantasy. The style ranged from romantic gowns to street wear. In 2010 I embarked on a long-held dream of mine: to study archaeology. This was so demanding in time, that I decided to discontinue my business temporarily. It has brought me so many beautiful experiences and I've travelled to places I wouldn't have dreamed of ever going to. Now I am in the later phases of my study (2 year master)- and I have some time again. Maybe I will be able to put these archaeological experiences into my work (for example, some designs may be inspired upon an archaeological find). I also hope to get back to goldsmithing this year, so expect some jewellery for sale in the future as well:).

My reasons for choosing the name ' Monogatari'* is partially a long held fascination for mythology & Japan, and the idea that clothing is often tied to nostalgia in some form...some clothing is worn at certain life stages, events or occasions and with it you can either ' transform' yourself (temporarily?) in a different character (dressed for ' function' such as job interview/ ' authority' )or just what I specialize in: a bit of escapism and love for (imagined) culture of the past. I like the idea that my creations hopefully add to happy memories in your life.

(* Monogatari is a Japanese literary form in which mythologies or fictional /'more embellished' family histories are told. One very famous work of fiction is that of Genji Monogatari.)

Hello there :)! I'm Marianne Talma from the Netherlands, currently studying Archaeology in Germany. After concentrating most of my time on my studies, I missed my sewing machine so much I couldn't take it anymore- so here I am. With my clothing brand Monogatari I aim to bring some nostalgia from the past...or for the future past:) If anything, foremost: I like to make other people happy with them - I put a lot of heart in my work and I try to keep the whole process fair. I am also open for sometimes trading items- it is not always about the money.

I've also had an education in goldsmithing...I hope to make more jewellery in the future, but I think that will still be a few months, perhaps after my masters' thesis is done. I might occasionally also offer items I have made with experimental archaeology (metallurgy)...for example bronze casting or black smithing.

Currently, by purchasing my items you help me fund my master thesis' project, so thank you!
