Video summary: Our wood monsters are hand painted by the two Human Helpers at Monstorium. In fact, everything is done by the two of us!

We make monsters and encourage fun-loving humans to adopt them!

Welcome to Monstorium®! A collection of fun, friendly monsters– Now created in Grand Rapids, Michigan!

The monsters you find here are for ages 5 to 500 and are created to spread joy, have fun, and fulfill the needs of the young at heart. Over time, our collection will grow and expand (like my monster midsection), so please come back to visit our monsters from time to time!

The following is a excerpt from the memoirs of the Monstorium leader:
"Since I was a wee salamander-sized baby monster, I have dreamed of creating a place for beasts to exist until they can find a safe home. The monsters at Monstorium are all seeking loving dwellings and fun families.

I run the show around here, but my “curators” seem to think they help more than they hinder my creative process. Sure they create my monster friends, and run the online shop, manage orders, feed and care for our monsters until they are adopted, encourage the adoption of my monster friends during First and Third Fridays…okay, so they do a lot. Plus, I believe they have day jobs or something. At any rate, I am the head monster in charge! Sometimes they call me Bossy Beast, but I’m good with that. At least my human minions understand their place!
So anyway, my human partners seem to have a reasonably good grasp on what it takes to run my Monstorium, so I let them do their thing."

Thank you for helping and housing our monsters!

  • Monster in Charge

Bossy Beast, Monster In Charge, Inspirational Figure

Since I was a wee salamander-sized monster, I have dreamed of creating a place for beasts until they can find a safe home. I run the show, but my human partners have a reasonably good grasp on what it takes to run my Monstorium, so I let them help.

  • The Human Female Helper

    Curator, Customer Service, Owner

She's an artist, a mother, and is kind enough but possibly too sweet. I’ll keep my monster-vision focused on her. The other monsters adore her too and know they can always talk to her.

  • The Human Male Helper

    Curator, Designer, Owner

This guy. I'm not sure about this guy. He helps with marketing and is good at making our monsters just a little scary. His dry humor may be too cheesy and punny for his own good at times.

  • Little Humans that Help

The little humans that help are super nice and friendly. The monsters all enjoy their company, and appreciate the level of fun the little humans inject into the Monstorium's atmosphere!

Frequently asked questions
Wholesale availability

We make our monsters in small batches and do not offer wholesale pricing.

Gift wrapping and packaging

The Human Helpers wrap our monsters in a variety of kraft paper-brown or black. They can use white tissue paper if desired. Personalized gift notes can also be hand written or typed up and printed on one of their creepy cute monster thank you cards.

Sizing details

Each monster-themed Monstorium product has its dimensions included in the listing. Stuffies (plushies) may vary slightly in size depending on how we cut and sew the fabric and that is why a size range is listed for our series of stuffed monsters.

Custom and personalized orders

We offer custom painted peg dolls and can create custom colored monster stuffies. Some of our stuffie listings are for customized versions of our monsters. We only customize our own monster stuffie designs.

What kind of fabrics do you use?

We use eco-friendly materials as often as we can for all of our monster-themed products. Selected fabrics are USA source and are printed using ecologically-safe transfer sublimation inks. The stuffing for our stuffies/plush monsters is 100% polyester and is hypoallergenic.

What kind of paints and sealers do you use?

Monstorium's two Human Helpers hand paint the wood monsters, ornaments, and big heads with non-toxic acrylic paint, and initial and number each one before sealing them with water-based varnish. These fun little art collectibles are decorative but also serve other purposes such as ornaments, cake toppers, game pieces, and so much more! They are a fan favorite for kids as toys or for adults as cubicle displays or seasonal home decor. Our monsters might be creepy, but not toxic!

Are you reselling items made on the cheap in another country?

We happily make our own products.
Our duo of monster designers start with brainstorming and sketches in the Tome of Monstrous Ideas before the little creatures are brought to life as hand painted or digitally illustrated products on wood, fabric, or paper. We strive to utilize methods, materials and production partners that are ethical and earth-friendly–resulting in monsters and creatures of lore that are genuinely nothing to be afraid of!

Who is the Bossy Beast?

During one of our early painting and monster design sessions, we unwittingly unleashed an ancient entity that has claimed the shape of a scaley, reptilian sea monster. This creature’s goal, as stated to us, is to use the Monstorium to share monsters with the world, and his story, one too long, has been incredibly inspirational to us. Now dubbed the Bossy Beast, he has become a mascot of sorts and believes himself to be the brains of the operation. We do allow him to be front and center, which has only encouraged his behavior, but since we know who actually does the work, and are not interested in the limelight, the arrangement seems to work out for us. He is very opinionated and bossy, but we love him anyway!

How did Monstorium begin?

Monstorium got its start in 2017 at Cocoon Art Space, a pop-up art space dedicated to local artists, where we curated exhibits during first and third Fridays in the Roosevelt Arts District. The cute monsters we enjoyed painting and designing for ourselves first made their appearance as decorative pieces on a shelf at the art space, but such interest developed around the figurines that we decided to create a business around them. Our monster business allows us to use our creativity and skills to create creepy cute products that include, wood monster ornaments and boxed sets, Big Heads made from reclaimed wood, posters, stickers, totes, zipper pouches, apparel, and our favorites, the brightly colored stuffies!

Do you have a storefront or place shop where I can find Monstorium products?

At this time, Monstorium sells online and in-person at local artisan markets. We strive to be active in the art and craft community and can be found in Grand Rapids and surrounding areas when local events are scheduled.
