Hi, I’m John Timothy, from Muskogee, Oklahoma! My tribal affiliation is with the Muscogee Creek Nation. Together with my wife, MaryBeth, we run a shop that features a wide variety of items, from original artwork and prints to cuff bracelets and decorative ceramic tiles. We currently serve as mentors for other up-and-coming Indigenous shops on Etsy, helping with guidance on entrepreneurship.

I’ve been drawing for most of my life. I started painting in my 20s and was immediately drawn to Indian art. Now, I merge modern pop culture with Native humor in my work, creating a parody. Laughter and humor are a very important part of culture amongst Natives. It's not the image that's often imagined, a tribal council, sitting stoically and passing around the stick to talk—it's something else very different, something joyful, something humorous. I also aim to create pieces
that will spark a conversation; if it creates conversation, it's art.

I worked at Five Tribes Museum, in Muskogee—MaryBeth worked there after I did, that's how we met! In the years I worked there, I learned quite a bit. Then, I became director of the Ataloa Lodge Museum at Bacone College. Working in the Native community, not just living, but working, provides a lot of confidence in this creative field.


Hi, I'm MaryBeth Timothy! My tribal affiliation is with the Cherokee Nation. I am incredibly inspired by the outdoors, wildlife, and nature in general. I also love to incorporate bits of my native culture and heritage into select pieces. The country, the woods, or near water are my happy places. Those quiet times of reflection recharge me and give me motivation and inspiration. I try to stick with mostly Oklahoma native animals, birds, and plants in my work. For my Native art, I like to use a variety of ancient southeast Native mound symbols, either incorporated in the background of a nature piece, or as collage- type work in a contemporary style. I love how it sparks conversation because most people think it is all contemporary-abstract. I can explain that it's ancient Native symbology, reworked with a contemporary spin. I love creating art that brings about that interaction with the viewer.

It's important to both of us that we keep our art accessible to the community. Pieces that people can appreciate and enjoy in their homes, and are affordable.
