About

Art by Morgyn Stranahan

I have lived in Milwaukee or the surrounding area all my life. My childhood was spent on a “hobby” beef farm. There I was taught work ethic. I remember thankfully the open fields and watching starlings swim in the sky, immensely fortunate to be so close to animals, tall climbing trees, areas of un-“developed” land, woods, and many siblings.

Once as a small child I became lost in a woody field. Night fall was swiftly approaching and I grew anxious. I began to wander frantically. Startling a rabbit out of tall grass I felt my heart race and panic growing. Not knowing what to do, I started to cry. Directly in front of me were wild strawberries. Filled with joy at the discovery I picked a few, stood, and found my way home. I remember the flavor clearly. Tiny and powerful, the sweetness expanding a secret sense of joy in my heart during such an unhappy time.

At the age of 15 I was assigned the task of sorting through some of my mother’s belongings after her death. It was then that I discovered a set of her paints. I took them into my room to use and there began to seriously study visual arts. She had cooked exquisite meals, sewn, quilted, and arranged flowers. The set of paints surprised me and I wondered what she would have created with them. She was loving, imperfect, creative, and an incredibly brave woman. I am proud to call her my mother.

From there I pursued art training more aggressively and attended college at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD). Feeling that drawing is the core of all visual art forms I chose it as my major. Without developing drawing ability visual communication with any tool would be unsuccessful. With drawing ability one gains the skills that can be applied to any media with time, effort, and clarity of thought. The community of artists I was introduced to there and the range of skills taught are of great value in my artistic career.

Since college I have continued to work. Relishing the flexibility of developing skills in drawing, painting, printmaking, the written word, collage, film, digital photography, language, and dance. Each in its own way helping me to learn and improve. The creative process of learning to tell a story with different tools has enabled me to communicate with more people. The gratitude for what I learn from each viewer can not be expressed enough.

There is always fear and frustration when pushing myself past my comfort zone forcing myself to learn and grow. It is simply part of the process and I enjoy the challenge and opportunity to improve. What would be the point without struggle? Life would grow boring. The fascination and also tension of the needed balance in this process. Constantly readjusting like standing on a balance board. Imaging the direction I wish to go and then willing it so.
