About

The Girl Behind MountainGirl.

My grammy was a talented quilter and had a meticulous eye for color, texture and of course her tendency to save each and every scrap of fabric.
I watched her work, I watched her creations come to life and fill peoples lives with that warm and fuzzy feeling that you only get when you know something was made with the kindness and care of someone else's own hands.

Here is a little about how Mountain Girl came to be:

Fashion Design School? Not for me.
I did try it, and I did learn a lot but it just didn't feel right.
Too structured, too rigid...where was all the wiggle room I needed as a designer to play?
I found that freedom when I switched majors and joined the Fiber Arts department of my college.
They said: here are the tools and materials: NOW GO!
I am not a sketcher, or step follower or planner.
I literally have to hold the material in my hands and go with the flow to create.
The beauty of working that way is nothing ever comes out perfect the first time and that is just fine with me.
My life is a whole circle of trials and error and learning from them, so why would my creative work be any different?

Sometimes when you feel the need to create or make, you just need to surrender to it.
You can ignore it, or hide it under a rug.
It will always come out in some way, shape or form.
In my brain I can see all the possibilities that an article of clothing can have and I HAVE to make it come true.
I HAVE to make it happen.
Sometimes that means completely deconstructing it, then putting it back together again in a new form.
Sometimes that means adding or subtracting from it.
Sometimes that means completely cutting it up the middle!

Yes, I've had normal jobs.
I've worked at a toy store as a cashier, at a restaurant as a busser, even driven an ice cream truck!
BUT
For me, there were no other alternatives.
This is exactly what I wanted to do, so I did it.
I started treating it like my full time job and it became one.

All clothing I create is either made of recycled or organic materials. I love using forgotten and unloved items of clothing and giving them new life. There are so many beautiful textures and fabrics and items of clothing that already exist in the world and I love to combine them into handmade high quality pieces so that they can find a new loving home.

My life revolves around these clothing creations and the joy I get from sewing each piece.
All of my materials come from either the salvation army, goodwill, community rummage sales/yard sales and friends and family so all of the money that I spend towards materials for my business goes towards my local community and organizations that benefit the greater good.

Thank you for taking the time to learn a little about me and what Mountain Girl is all about.

Welcome to my shop!
I strive to create high quality, unique and useful pieces of handmade clothing. I would never sell anything I wouldn't wear myself, so buy with confidence.
Of course you don't have to live in the mountains to be a Mountain Girl. If you see city lights as stars, buildings as distant mountains and pavement as a quiet dirt road to walk down, my handmade clothing is for you.
From high heels to hiking boots, I know we all have a little mountain in our hearts and minds.
