PASSING IT ON : Six Generations of M-provisational Quilt making Tradition
M-provisational Patch Shop was started by me , Sherry A. Byrd, in an effort to help my disabled mother sell more of her quilts, as well as, sell some of my own.
Because of job related injuries that forced her into early retirement in the 1980s, my mother now lives on a fixed income and wrestles with disabilities, such as being unable to stand for long periods of time, arthritis, and she is fitted with a pacemaker. Up until her retirement, she was always very active physically when it came to working, therefore she now feels the strong need to keep busy with her hands. She says that quit making helps to exercise her mind and body. It fills an urgent need for her to keep active and alert.
She constantly creates 5 days per week and her stash of finished quilts have grown tremendously over the years. We are constantly seeking new avenues, to sell these beautiful artworks. Etsy has opened up a new and unique venue for us, as a team, to present our artistic works to the public.
Our M-provisational quilts have six generations of quilt making history behind their existence. The skills and techniques have been passed down via family members ( mothers, daughters, aunts, cousins, etc.) ...continously over the generations. None of our creations are precision pieced or quilted....but they are perfectly and pleasingly unique and one - of - a - kind creatively in the m-provisational quilt making styles ,techniques and traditions handed down over the past in our family. The visuals of these creations can be sedate or eye popping....it just depends on the arrangement and selection of colors and types of materials chosen to be used in each composition.
My, Mom and I work independently on our own creations, but because we both have learned these techniques from her mother, Gladys C. Durham-Henry, our works can be similar in technique, composition and styles. But each is definitely one-of-a-kind when it comes to overall visual impact. appeal, and artistic touch. As independent artists, We both build on the basics passed down by her mother and my grandmother, Gladys C. Durham-Henry ... who received her training from her mother, Ellen Anna Titus-Durham....but we each add our own unique twists and spins to the traditional quilt making compositions and creative process.
Quilt making is not only in our genealogy....but also in our "BONES" . "HEART" AND "MINDS" and we wish to share it with our audience. So please feel free to join us at Mprovisational Patch Shop on Etsy to Window shop ,browse or make purchases as as often as you desire. We welcome your patronage.
