Mud and Ravens

www.muddyraven.com

So, whats my story?

I started work as a potter with very little training in 2013. Though I had taken a 101 class in college and then one more just after, I was not able to continue working with clay at that time. I did love it though. It was hard to keep me out of the studio when I had access to one. Many years later, after working in education and real estate, I was encouraged by my family to give pottery a try once more.

I borrowed equipment to begin with and eventually purchased some used Craigslist supplies so I could work from home. Soon after I took up this hobby, I was encouraged to try selling some of my work locally and was delighted with the response. Etsy came on my radar about this time and my online shop opened in the summer of 2013. At first it just sat there not getting much attention, but then I had my first sale and positive review. The ball started rolling from there and has been picking up steam ever since. Eventually, I got to the point where it made more sense to spend time developing my own business than it did to work for other people. Besides Etsy, I sometimes sell through other online venues, contribute to local street fairs, arts and crafts markets and have been featured in galleries in several cities in Arizona and California. I have gleefully embraced working as a professional ceramic artist and am very thankful to those that have made this possible.

Mugs are what I make more than anything else for several reasons. For one, I love coffee and tea and use mugs everyday myself. The idea of other people also using my art as a part of their daily lives brings me joy. Plus, the possibilities for mug designs are endless. Besides making mugs, I also really enjoy creating lidded vessel forms.

Why ravens? Because I love birds and ravens in particular. They are intelligent and comical. I like that they are scavengers, earth's clean up crew. They are beautiful creatures who have been part of mythology and their images have served as symbols from the earliest days in history. And trees? Who doesn't love trees? This subject matter allows me to take a meditative approach to my glazing process. Their growth on my pots is spontaneous. Lush green forests are my favorite places and the character of winter tree branches is inspiring.

While I do create repeat variations on my designs that prove popular. I like to be spontaneous when I work and rarely have a precise plan when I begin. I let the clay "show me" the shape it wants to take. With new designs, after the initial firing, I allow the shape of the piece to inspire how I decorate it. In this way each piece is unique. Because I create freehand, even for repeat designs there will never be one just like another. Each smaller sgraffito piece takes 2 - 6 hours of hands-on time to create. The process of ceramics in general takes about two weeks from start to finish due to clay drying times and the firing process.

Selling on Etsy is my favorite way to distribute my work. It is particularly satisfying because I often get to know a bit about my customers who end up with pieces through their profiles, shops and the comments they send me. I put my heart and soul into each piece and it's nice to feel connected to the people who end up using them. Etsy also allows customers to review my work and I love hearing people's thoughts this way.

Besides playing in the mud and being a dirt merchant, I am also a mother homeschooling two amazing kids. We have been a mobile family the last couple of years, following my husband's career from our original home in the beautiful Flagstaff Arizona mountains, to Silicon Valley in the California Bay Area and, most recently, settling in the gorgeously green and very historic state of Delaware. On weekends, we take advantage of this exciting change of scenery by exploring new amazing places around our new home together as a family. We also like to travel and explore farther abroad when we get the chance. Besides adventuring with my family, I enjoy listening to audiobooks while I work (and reading when I'm not working), photography, fiber arts, jewelry making, ancestry research, learning herbology, hiking, and cuddling with my dogs. I am also writing a novel - which may be turning into a series of novels as it takes on a life of its own :)

Thanks so much for stopping by and taking an interest in the story of my art.
