About

Rustic Montana Pottery, Soap and Designs

Mud 'n Suds Pottery, Soap and Rustic Designs was born in a small farm workshop just outside of Helena, Montana. It was created out of a love for playing in the mud through pottery followed by the need for a soap that cleaned us up without drying out our skin. In our dry Montana climate, that just couldn't happen. So, first came the mud, then came the suds and that's how it all started. Living in Montana, everywhere we turn we find rustic inspiration for our work and soon we expanded into wood and metalwork. We just have a love for the rustic look of pioneer life and you'll see these things come out in many of our creations.

To make pottery, I weigh it, wedge it, throw it, smooth it, trim it, handle and carve it, dry it, bisque it, wax it, decorate it, glaze it, fire it, inspect it, sand it, load it, haul it and store it or display it. At any one stage, something can go terribly wrong. Some of those wrongs are wrongs and some are BEAUTIFUL rights! I love the detail and freedom pottery gives me to be creative and try new things...either on purpose or by perfect accident.

I have been creating wonderful accidents and "on purposes" for several years out of my home studio located in the Elkhorn Mountains of Montana. I've put my degrees and education aside, so I can truly enjoy the peacefulness that creating brings. What is my most favorite part of creating? Sharing those with you! If you love my work, please let me know.

Thanks for visiting my online store.

Although I dabbled in ceramics as a young girl with my mom, my love for pottery grew as I watched my mother-in-law build her skill and her business from scratch. Of all others, she has had the greatest influence on my work and love for the craft.

Mud 'n Suds Pottery and Soap is a small business operating on a farm in a town near Helena, Montana. It was born out of a love of playing in the mud through pottery and then followed by the need for a soap that cleaned us up without drying out our skin. In our dry Montana climate, that just couldn't happen. So, after quite a bit of trial and error, I found a combination that gave us everything we needed in a bar of soap. Then, of course, the artisan in me needed soaps that also had to look cool. So, first came the mud, then came the suds and that's how it all started.

IS HANDMADE POTTERY FOR YOU?:
Remember, each piece is handcrafted and is unique. You should expect to find slight differences in craftsmanship and glaze patterns from the picture in the listing as well as amongst pieces of the same set. There are so many variables with pottery (e.g. glaze mix, glaze pour, kiln temperature and location of the piece inside the kiln, etc.). There will be slight differences in each piece in size, shape and glazes. If you want exact replicas, then handcrafted, handmade pottery is likely not for you. It is these differences that give pottery its character as you can see the artisan's creation at work.

I will do wholesale and custom orders. Please contact me directly for assistance.
