Creating 'Functional Nostalgia'

Based in Portland, Oregon, Mugwump utilizes all variety of recycled goods, from retro records & cast away vinyl banners to lost maps and your favorite childhood books and creates handbags, wallets, and other fun accessories.
A former teacher, Suzanne Keolker took her love of children's books & created accessories from discarded beat up books & games & records. Learning early on from her mother that nothing gets wasted, she tries to utilize all the parts of the things she gleans from thrift stores to create bags, wallets, passport/checkbook covers & clutches - just to name a few. She loves creating functional accessories that include a bit of whimsy, eco-friendliness, and because she's a bit sentimental, nostalgia.

Some materials appear to have never been in a person's possessions and are in quite pristine condition. Other materials have a bit of a worn look about them which are her favorite because you know that a kid loved that book, or a family played that board game while eating potato chips, or a sweet lady carefully wrote her name in cursive on the top of sheet music to make sure it would be returned if borrowed. These are happy stories that show life was lived in their household and the materials let go show that. It means that the object was used and appreciated for what it was meant to do: to teach or entertain or help someone navigate on a road trip.

Some folks want Mugwump to create using their own materials and Suzanne is happy to do just that. Please create a Conversation with your request.

I've created accessories from reclaimed materials for close to 20 years! I started on my off days from teaching 4th graders. My love of children's literature, old discarded books, and not letting anything go to waste helped Mugwump get its start.
