About

The history of My Daddy's Cross

In February 2010, my family went through one of the toughest experience we had ever been through. My father suffered a brain aneurysm while coaching a 6th grade girls’ basketball game. Thankfully, the athletic trainer was at the game. She recognized the severity of his symptoms and got him rushed to the hospital and into the caring hands of one of the top brain surgeons in the world. When the doctor told us the staggering statistics about survival and full recovery from brain aneurysm, we all knew how lucky he was to have the best medical team on his side.
As we sat in the waiting room outside of ICU, the outpouring of love from friends, family, current students, parents, and former students was immense. My dad’s players wrote emails, made cards, and left my dad the most adorable voicemails. I cried a lot reading these to my dad. Out of all of this, one item stood out. It was given by the parent of one of my dad’s students. A small beaded cross.
My mother hung that beautiful purple beaded cross from my dad’s IV pole and his recovery began to quicken to a point that even the doctors were amazed. My father ended up recovering 100%, which is incredibly rare.
Not long after my Mom’s close friend (who had been in the hospital waiting room by our side) was diagnosed with breast cancer. My mom gave my daddy’s cross to her to hang on her IV pole as she went through chemo. It became such a symbol of friendship, encouragement, faith, hope, and love for both my mom’s friend and all of the other women in the hospital receiving chemo at the same time as her. She ended up gifting crosses to all of the women who battled by her side. She is now in full remission.
In 2013, my cousin ended up in the ICU fighting for his life. He ended up in a coma. Again, my incredible mother purchased a cross and sent it to her sister to hang on his IV pole. He fully recovered. The incredible power of love and hope in healing our loved ones never ceases to awe me.
As my mom continued to send love and healing to those in need, and the requests for crosses kept coming, she was finding it harder and harder to find beaded crosses that met her needs and were up to her standards. This is where I come in. From my earliest days, I have always been the creator in our family. I can always be found making art, clothing, jewelry, fashion accessories, wreaths, candles, and all myriad of special gifts for friends and family. One day my mom called me because she was in need of a cross and could not find one. She had ordered some on Etsy, but they just were not what she wanted. She asked that I attempt to start making them so that she would always have them and they would be made with love and care.
As soon as I realized I would be making many more crosses than I initially expected, I headed over to consult with my friend Robin. We have collaborated on many projects and we serve as each other’s creative sounding boards and problem solvers. While he helped me refine my process for making the wire crosses and keeping the quality and size consistent, I continued to scavenge wood for him to turn anywhere I could in order to keep it from ending up in landfills or burn piles. We have scored some amazing pieces of lumber out of dumpsters, construction sites and anywhere else we can think of. I continue to be amazed at the way he can turn any piece of wood, including scrap lumber and tree branches into some of the most beautiful pieces of art. Once you own one of his pieces and hold it in your hand, you will instantly understand what I mean.
Keep checking back as we continue on our creative journey through beads, wood, paint and recycled finds.
