About

I Knit From the Future

Growing up, I eagerly watched Star Trek, Dr, Who, the Twilight Zone, the Outer Limits, and every sci-fi, monster, horror movie and/or tv show I could find. When I was old enough to read, I started with fairy tales, moved on to C.S. Lewis and Tolkien, and then to hard SF as a teenager, and I've never looked back!

After I started Handknit Habitat, I attended my first Dr. Who convention and found that sci-fi fans like myself enjoyed having accessories tailored to their interests. So, I decided to "reboot" and focus my efforts on making and selling items that featured science-fiction and fantasy-related themes. I'm delighted to be able to combine my two oldest and dearest loves, science fiction and knitting, and I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I do.

My knitted accessories are made from yarns sourced as responsibly as possible, many from independent American yarn producers and dyers. I knit each item by hand. Each hat takes 5-7 hours to create. Scarves can take 40-60 hours to make. I use only the finest natural materials including wool, silk, bamboo, soy, alpaca, linen, and cotton as well as easy-care fibers such as acrylic and super-wash wool.

Additional policies and FAQs
Many HH items are made from hand dyed fibers, and all are made from the finest yarns on the market. Every purchase will include a free packet of Woolite (for acrylic/acrylic blend yarns) or Unicorn Fibre Wash (for wool garments) to encourage you to "safely soak your fine washables."

Be sure to check the label that I have sewn into your item. There are washing instructions there that are specific to your particular hat's fiber. However, here are some general guidelines to remember when caring for your knitted items:

Acrylic and other synthetic fibers:
... can usually be machined washed and dried. Use the cold/gentle setting on the washing machine and the "low" setting on the dryer. If your hat has an embroidered design on the surface, or a pom pom on top, turn your hat inside out before washing to protect it.
Wool, Alpaca, Cashmere, and other animal fibers:
...should be hand-washed. Soak in Woolite for 3 minutes, squeeze (do not twist), roll in in a towel, or spin it in the spin cycle of your washing machine. Then lay it out flat and let it dry overnight.
Cotton, Linen, and other plant fibers:
...can be hand-washed (as described above) OR machine washed in cold water on the gentle cycle. Then, spin it in the spin cycle and lay it flat to dry overnight OR tumble dry low for 10-15 minutes.
