About

The Story of My Zoetrope

Hello! My name is Michelle, and I run the shop "My Zoetrope." I am an Illustrator and Designer, residing in Rochester NY, who loves to create quirky and happy art that will make people laugh and smile and surprise them with silliness. I'm a strong believer that people should be surrounded by things that inspire them, make them happy, and bring a little positivity to their day-to-day life. I love all things cute and super-colorful, and hope to bring big smiles and happiness to people who come across my work!

Way back in the day, little Kindergarden-me was the "official fashion designer" for my friend's "rock band" that we formed. 5-year old me was in charge of designing all of their crazy outfits and stage costumes for when they would become rich and famous. I used to keep stacks of construction paper with these doodles on them and carried them with me in my probably-awesome backpack everywhere. We were destined for greatness!

The band didn't work out, but I wasn't about to let that stop me. Drawing and painting and all things artsy was what I did best throughout school, so I decided to go to college (RIT) for Illustration. I moved to Brooklyn, NY shortly after graduation, with no job but lots of ambition. Those little fashion doodles of my youth translated to my first adult-job as a surface pattern designer for a junior's fashion company. That means that I got to draw cute little characters that would go on your pajama pants and shirts all day long. It was the best really.

But then it wasn't, and I had the itch to make my own designs, without approval or changes from the big-wigs, so I applied to a big craft fair on a whim (BUST Craftacular! No big deal!), and was accepted. What I made then is VERY different from what I make now, but that is the point really, to evolve and change and be better at what you do and love. I opened up my Etsy shop shortly after that show and it has been a blaze of awesome ever since! I was able to quit my day job in 2010 to work on My Zoetrope full-time, and it brings so many smiles and warm happy thoughts to know that I get to do this for a living. Yay!

Some random Q&A that people ask me a lot:
Q: What the heck does "My Zoetrope" mean?
A: "Zoe" means "life" and "trope" means "Turn," in Greek. It may be taken to mean "wheel of life" or "living wheel." My Zoetrope is an ever-evolving wheel of my life and the silliness, craziness, prettiness, happiness, and absurdness of it. Life is fun; Work should be too!
