About

I couldn’t resist the “call of the wool.”

I began making art dolls in 1994 using polymer clay, but the first puppet I ever built was a stop-motion animation puppet made using foam, cast latex and aluminum wire, with a polymer clay head. In 2006 I sculpted my first hand puppet head using polymer clay and wire. The result, Agent Alpha, was a great puppet to look at, but heavy and not a comfortable performance tool.

My encounter in 2009 with needle-felted dolls was a watershed moment. I fell in love with the material: the softness, the malleability, the lightness and colorful luminosity, the way that needle-felted things somehow seem alive. I couldn’t resist the “call of the wool,” eventually I had to try it for myself.

Once I began needle-felting, I was hooked. I could finally “paint” in three dimensions, and the fine layers of wool can even have the kind of transparency and shading that oils or watercolors impart. I love creating puppets and dolls from wool, and I have been doing improvisational street theater with the puppets, too.

I am still learning about this magical material and what it can do. I hope you will share that journey of discovery with me. Thank you for visiting my shop, and if you like this work, please feel free to share it with friends.
