About

Autonomy for artisans in rural Panama, fashion alternative for you

The idea for Cooperativa El Nido had been brewing for many years in the mind of its founder, Rebecca Kore Rodriguez. As a child growing up in Panama, she was captivated by the molas her dad brought back from fishing trips to San Blas islands. Decades later, looking to add a creative lifestyle to her other job as a psychotherapist, Rebecca made her way back to Panama and to fulfill her childhood vision of incorporating molas with her fashion sensibilities and working with indigenous tailors.

Combining her passion for human culture, art and fabric, Rebecca sought a way to bring indigenous symbols and vibrant combinations of colors into everyday urban life.

Soon after her return to Panama in 2008, Rebecca’s interest in connecting with tribal groups led her to work with the community of Las Gaitas, a sustainable organic farm located in the hills of Capira, an hour from Panama City.

Impressed with the community’s ability to work cooperatively, she wanted to be part of the next chapter in their growth. Rebecca started by meeting with the women on sewing projects: they learned about each other, built trust and developed an understanding of their needs and hopes for the future.

Eventually she became a part of their community; she knew that they needed to create autonomy and sustainability outside the grueling life of farming.

They worked together, using molas to create wearable art and the women developed an alternative source of income that encouraged the preservation of their endangered sewing traditions. They have worked together since that time to create bags and sell them worldwide.

Kathryn joined the team in 2011 and helped the Rebecca and the women take the next step.

In 2012 Nido Shop in Playa Coronado opened in order to showcase the wide range of one of a kind Nido bags and to display the growing range of products in the Nido brand.

We strive to engender a feeling of community to all who wear and gift our bags.

If you purchase an item and are not completely satisfied, please contact us within 30 days so that we may have the opportunity to correct that immediately. We take great pride in our work and want you to be completely thrilled with your bag.

Since our bags are “artesanales,” made by human hands, every once in a while you´ll find evidence of that in one of your bags. We will patch, resew, and rebliss your bag for you to your utmost satisfaction.

In all fairness to the women who construct these bags and to the necessity of running a business, we can’t cross certain business savvy lines in our desire to please you if there’s nothing wrong with the bag you’d like to exchange and the purchase was made beyond the 30 day return period.

We recommend that you try out the bag immediately to make sure that your yoga mat will fit, that your doggie will lay comfortably inside of one if you wish to use it to carry, and that it´s big enough to hold your universe and that the colors, shapes and combos rock your world.
