Excitedly following my passion in retirement, YAY!!!

After I retired, I found myself with time on my hands. I started with “Spring Cleaning" I had not found time to do in eons. I came across some of my old painting supplies ( dried up paints, crumpled sketch pads, but my brushes had been stored carefully and were useable) and other craft items. Twenty years ago, I painted a huge Santa gourd that I love. It is the first gourd I ever created. Inspired by this Santa, I decided to look into buying some gourds and making birdhouses for my daughters. While researching gourds on Pinterest, I saw oodles of gorgeous ideas, resources, and jumped in. I bought swan gourds from the East Coast, birdhouse gourds from the West Coast, bought fresh paints, and dove in.

Well, well, well..... I forgot a small detail of gourd art. The prep work😳Gourds take about a year to dry after they are harvested. Once dried, they are covered in dried oookie, nasty, crusty stuff and stains, lumps, bumps. Swan gourds are NOT pre-cleaned when purchased. You have to soak the gourds to loosen the crappiola up, then manually scrub and scrub and scrub to get them clean. Then dry them out again. Next, you have to sand off any of the other "stuff" you can. I was exhausted by the time the swan gourds were finally ready to paint. Other gourds can be purchased pre-cleaned, but still have to be prepped: drill holes, add hanging wire, and sand, sand, sand them. Lol, I am developing “guns!”

I was a bit rusty, but after a bit of trial & error, I got the hang of the painting techniques again, creativity flowed! I had forgotten how much joy it brought me. Bless my family and friends for being so supportive. They made special orders: alpaca, goat, tomato, chicken, Grinch birdhouse, Elf on a Shelf, and barn name signs with mini portraits of each the goats, alpacas, rabbits, horses. Everyone loved them and said I should try selling them to the public. My daughter, who has a very successful Etsy shop helped me set it up, for which I will forever be grateful. Let me say, it is one thing to make an item for a family member, friend, or even neighbor, quite another to put your artwork out for the world to see. I cannot express how humbled I was by the even further support my family, friends, and neighbors showed for me when I opened my Etsy shop. I had several orders throughout the first 6 weeks, all from them. Brought tears to my eyes!
I was tickled and scared to death when I received my first order from a stranger. Someone who did not know, nor love me. Bless her heart, she took the time to give me a wonderful review too. Getting back into creating gourd art has been an amazing experience, made even better with the existence of Etsy. Etsy makes the whole process so much easier and gives me the ability to reach folks all over. I create EVERY gourd with a grateful heart, excitement and TLC! I sincerely appreciate your taking time to read this and taking an interest in my passion!
