About

Artist with a love for Archaeology

I completed my first oil painting at the age of 13, studying painting and drawing under Claudia Hartley until college. I attended Mercer University, achieving my degree in art, and began my career as an artist. Selling my paintings and painting murals in homes, churches and cafes in the southeast, I decided to move in a different direction in 2002. I moved to Florence, Italy and began a program in Art Conservation. Finding a love for working with historical objects, I combined a love for archaeology with my artistic ability and continued into the masters program in Conservation for Archaeology and Museums at the University College London in 2005, completed in 2008.

Following London, I moved to Maryland to continue in conservation of archaeological material at the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab. I was there for 2 1/2 years and loved my work, continuing to draw and paint on the side. I participated in art shows in Southern Maryland and especially enjoyed painting en plein air with the gorgeous scenery of the Chesapeake Bay and Patuxent River. However, I missed Atlanta, deciding to return in the middle of July 2011. I decided to focus more on my painting while continuing in conservation part-time. As I continue in the field of conservation, I hope to incorporate more of my experiences on archaeological excavations and the fascinating objects I have worked with into my oil paintings and continue to draw from the fullness of life as I paint.

I tend to draw and paint from sketches I do from life. My work draws on those sketches that are glimpses of life whether a landscape, figure or still-life. The paintings and drawings I do may take the whole or just a small part of the sketch, depicting the feeling and expression of the moment in both representational and abstract methods. I use more intense color to show the vibrancy of life, but I love the blending and bleeding of colors with each brushstroke showing the beauty of the ebb and flow of life, the beauty within the chaos and the beauty of the unexpected. Some of my work is purely imaginative, painting trees with figures within the trunks, but these are still drawn from life in their expression of emotion and the relationships between the figures.

I work primarily in oil on canvas, loving the texture and the rich, deep color of the oil paint, the blending colors and brushstrokes. I create a thick texture that invites the viewer to follow the brushstrokes and enter the landscape of the painting. Without adding any medium to the paint to add to the texture or speed drying time, the purity of the paint keeps the intensity of the color true. Loving the feel of the oil and watching the painting come together, the process becomes as important as the result.

While I love to paint large oil paintings, I began my little 4" x 4" paintings in December as gifts for friends and family. I enjoyed them so much and received such a great response to them that I decided to paint more of these paintings that can fit in your pocket!
