NantucketCards' Shop Announcement

Nantucket Island is depicted here, with her lighthouses and windmills, sailing, fishing and pleasure boats, beaches and ponds, whaling mansions and cottages, through the camera lens of early 20th century photographer H. Marshall Gardiner. Mass produced by The Detroit Publishing Company, with the Swiss “Photochrom” process of using lithographic stones to convert black and white prints to color, these cards were then shipped to Nantucket via railroad and steamboat to be offered for sale as inexpensive postcards. The Detroit Publishing Company called them “little phostint journeys” and that’s just what they are.

The cards for sale here are little journeys into Nantucket’s past. With many I have included some history or an anecdote to accompany the journey. Where possible I will include a snapshot of the scene as it appears “today”. I hope you find them attractive, informative and a pleasure to own. Buy some to use in crafts, give as gifts or collect the whole set. I have large quantities of some scenes. Please convo me to inquire about volume discounts. If there are Gardiner cards you do not see in my shop, convo me; if it’s a scene I have, I will post it here for sale. I invite you to look through my shop, find some cards you like and make them your “little journeys to Nantucket Island”

NantucketCards' Shop Policies

Welcome

These little post card "journeys" take you back to an earlier time on Nantucket. H. Marshall Gardiner photographed the island between 1910 and 1940. Although his pictures were in black and white, Gardiner selected some to be colorized by the Detroit Publishing Company's "PHOSTINT" process. Most of the cards I will be selling are excess, original inventory from Gardiners Photography and Art Supply Store that he and his family owned and operated at 16 Main Street, Nantucket until 1961. Now the current location of Ralph Lauren. I will also sell Gardiner's "Nantuckromes", his black & whites and Nantucket cards from other artists and publishers. Thanks for stopping and shopping at my store and I hope you enjoy collecting these little pieces of Nantucket history.
