About NatalieStrachan

Hand-thrown on the potters wheel these cups are drying out naturally before they are fired for the first time.
-
After the first firing I paint the bases with wax so that when glazing the bottoms don't get coated and stuck.
-
Cups ready to be dipped and painted with the liquid glaze which turns to a powder on the surface of the porous bisque.
-
Glazed work waiting to be packed into the kiln for the 2nd firing to turn the powdered glaze coating into glass.
-
Here are the magical results after this long (two weeks minimum) process!
Contemporary Pottery
I have been at my studio share in South London since the August 2013 working on creating a contemporary, cheery, bold, bright and colourful collection of functional stoneware pieces. Most pieces are hand-thrown on the potters wheel meaning that each piece is a one-of-a-kind. I decorate the pots, mugs, bowls and vases with homemade glazes featuring my signature flecks of complimentarily colour. Having a background in design and illustration: my aesthetic is influenced by the simple, functional shapes of modernism as well as my drive to experiment and develop the techniques that enable me to achieve such bold, bright and colourful decorations that are more akin to modern materials than to the ancient art of pottery making.
