SUSTAINABILITY

🌿💦Each of our dyes are mixed with rain harvested water to create unparalleled rich, natural tones. Our proprietary organic botanica body care are created in small batches in correlation to the lunar cycle.🌕🌖🌗🌘🌑

When supporting organic cotton it is giving the gift of health and happiness to thousand of families. Did you know that organic cotton is harvested by hand? The plant is nurtured and respected from seed, through its growth, then hand picked with gratitude. It is an industry grown from love and gratitude.

What is GOTs
The certification of GOTS ( Global Organic Textile Standard)
is the HIGHEST worldwide standard for the organic textile industry.
It is made up of many countries creating a unified requirement for the organic textile industry representing a Global standard because the textile industry is one of the worst environmentally hazardous agricultural and manufacturing products made, containing very high amounts of pesticides, toxic fertilizers and dangerous processing chemicals.
OTA ( Organic Trade Association of the USA ) is part of the GOTS family.
GOTS not only guarantees safe ecological, environmental organic practices from seed to manufactured textile, it also guarantees the social rights and fair trade practices of all the employees in that chain eliminating child labor, toxic fertilizers & pesticides..no GMO.

We have taken this pact of honoring the hands whom have worked in gratitude and intention in the creation of our organic cotton cloth. We further this journey of love and gratitude with our devotion in delivering you a hug in the form of the items we create.

As we walk this path, more and more we know we are moving in the right direction. We were the first to bring you an organic bengkung bind and the first to bring plant dyed binds Working now solely with organic cotton fills our hearts with a humble gratitude. We are forever grateful for your support and making this possible.

PAYING IT FORWARD
A percentage of every purchase is donated to help support international charities for traditional midwifery, birthing women, their babies, and the birth workers whom support them in their birthing journey.
The World Health Organization reports that only 46% of women in low-income countries benefit from skilled care during childbirth. This means that millions of births are not assisted by a midwife, a doctor or a trained nurse. We want to change that.

Since 2015 we have supported women and their families with being innovators and creators of new original techniques, concepts and designs. We pride ourselves on being a small mother-daughter business, focused on green/responsible sourcing, honesty, and love. Not only do we work very hard to provide the very best quality to you, but we also feel it very important to also bring you knowledge, information and help to support you at this time.

My mother is Katherine: LHE ( licensed holistic esthetician.)
She holds certifications in
Ayurvedic & Eastern health and beauty protocols,
numerous reflexology methods and chroma-light therapies.
She is an accomplished textile artisan, seamstress
and has enjoyed working with botanicals for 45 years now. She refers to them as her friends. I understand that now.
I am Carolyn, her daughter: CPD (certified postpartum doula) CA (certified aromatherapist) RCYT (registered child yoga instructor) and Bengkung trainer. My eldest son Reece has begun joining us with his desire to dye and create binds. We love living a life of color, having created close to 100 hand mixed color combinations over the years!

OUR LOVE FOR WHAT WE DO
——————————————————
Our unique Ice dyed collection (Katherine):

WABI SABI NATURE OF ICE DYING
Ice dying is a relatively new form of dying.
After preparing the fabric, it is covered with ice.
The dye pigment is in its powered form and is dispersed over the ice.
As the ice melts, the dye fractionates into its individual particles of colors illuminating the elements of the formula. Example being a grey dye will fractionate into a multitude of colors to create the grey.
The Wabi Sabi nature of this method will often reveal the little secrets of the dye formula showing how the creator of the formula used just a dash of a rogue color to enhance or perfect the dye hue. It is common to see the rogue colors and they are a intrinsic special element of Ice Dying.

The air temperature, the size of the ice, how it is laid out, covered, all has to be calculated out for that season of dying and often even for a particular day since we dye all fabric outdoors.
Even particular pigments vary in how they respond to the ice and outdoor temperatures. Some pigments need to be applied very sparse while others need a double application. Some need the ice removed after a very short time while others are left to fully melt.
It is not like direct dying which can be done in a very short time in a very small space just about anywhere. I have designed and created 7 foot screens for dying 17 yards of fabric.
This whole process is a unique creation of mine. Ice Dyed fabric has a very special beautiful look which cannot be accomplish or replicated by direct dying. For me, the colors in ice dying always appear joyous.

https://www.etsy.com/shop/theBarefootMomma/items

Direct dyed collection (Carolyn&Reece):
We hand grind and mix our cold water procion dye sourced from Dharma Trading into a liquid form using our harvested water .

An assortment of chosen colors are then applied to the fabric and set to batch. 🕰
Our dye formulas, the order of how the colors are applied and the ratios are all calculated and recorded.
We use rain 💦 from our catchment system for even the quality of water effects the colors. This also assures no chemicals have been added to the water👍
Procion dyes are the safest dyes for sensitive skin and are low inpact non toxic dyes. They are being recognized by GOTS and commonly used on organic textiles because of their safety and low impact on the environment and natural resources.

INSPIRATION
Our surroundings of the southwest inspire us daily but when you get down to truly how we select our color combinations, it is an organic creative experience. ⛰ 🌵 🌸
Having lived in numerous lands, each holding its unique complexity of beauty, there is no end of inspirational colors that live within us.
Over the years we have created close to 100 color combinations and having done so we know that all color combinations are found in nature ...mother nature is the true original creator of all color combinations, the rest of us are merely echoing back to her.

SIDE NOTE^^^(I am seeing fiber reactive chemical dyes now being labeled as NATURAL & VEGAN because technically they do not contain animal by-products but we personally feel this is extremely misleading leaving the customers to think they are plant sourced dyes.)

________________________

Solid Immersion Bath collection (Katherine):
Our monochromatic colors are usually tweeked colors. It is something I have always done. I have a color in mind and figure it out. It is always has my personal touch. My softer lighter colors are usually the second bath of my dye for I am always figuring out ways to be more resourceful.
No matter what technique we use, we keep it real, keep it us and keep it fun.

About

Our Story

Barefoot Momma is a mother daughter business. My mother is my greatest inspiration, raising me as a single mom. I was a home birth baby myself, and have aspired to be the mother to my sons that she is for me. We are best friends and love working together in our shared business.
After teaching art as a certified BFA k-12 art teacher for several years I decided to go back to my roots and become a part of the birth community.
I started the business as Natural Momma in 2015 in Tucson, AZ.
I became a CPD certified postpartum doula and CA (certified aromatherapist.)
I expanded my yoga certifications to baby and am and child as a RCYT (registered child yoga teacher) most importantly
I passed the threshold of motherhood with the birth of my first son. My second son was born in 2018.
I am a blessed daughter, sister, wife, and mother living a life as full of laughter I can. I am so honored to be doing the work I now do.

Our bengkung journey began with a collection of sewn natural unbleached muslin binds stamped with wooden textile blocks from India, plus black binds, Indonesian batiks and some direct dyed colors. My very first sale was a black bengkung bind.

2016: we created our trademark look of the twist having the tail be a batik , white or variegated colors. We also were the first to dye the bind with Turmeric and felt it to be a very sacred bind because of turmerics historical use.
We expanded our direct dyed collection and offered free online mini Bengkung classes.

2017: I changed the name to The Barefoot Momma. We began offering a fray edge, more solid colors of dye baths mixes of our own creation and moved away from direct dye to begin our unique artisan ice dyed collection.

2018 my mother and I became an LLC partnership: Expanding on her ice dyed and organic collections, more bath dyed seasonal collections, natural indigo, and brought back some of our previous direct dyed creations. More are still returning.
2018 was also a year of tragedy for us. In the autumn, on my mothers birthday, she spent the day with us to return home that night finding she had lost her home to a fluke electrical fire. Her ice dyed binds are very unique and we had created extremely large special screens for her dying methods. To work on the scale she does was a ingenious creative act in itself. I think she might be the only one doing it on this scale and she lost it all. All of the work studio, dyes and fabric, washing/ sewing machine, etc etc gone.

2019 I expanded the direct dyed collection so that I can help her more in that department. I am also launching online wrap42 summits, broadening our organic collections and organic body care products.
A new concept of ours we implemented this year was to change all the names of our colors from their previous nature titles to little words to inspire and support. I am a lover of affirmations and when scrolling through the names of colors, we use to have names inspired by nature ( flowers, plants, trees, animals, landscapes, environments) with a bit of info of it like our previous Desert Lavender, JackRabbit, Blue Agave, Tiger Lily etc. We saw others beginning to follow that path so we felt it would be more fun and unique to scroll through little words to inspire, comfort and support you. Throughout this year we will be bringing more and more new products and concepts. It is our year of the phoenix.

My mother now lives in a very little casita in my backyard and we are still in the process of rebuilding and expanding our dye studio and the production studio/workroom.
She has a background as a textile artistan, her work having been selected into a juried exhibit by a major museum that went on to tour through out the USA through other major recognized museums for five years. Her artisan garments have been merchandized through art to wear galleries/boutiques. She is the one who teaches me the natural and most eco-friendly ways of hand dying. She is also a licensed holistic aesthetician ( skin care professional) and has been working with natural body care ingredients and essential oils since the seventies. She holds numerous certifications in Reflexology, Chroma-therapy, Ayurvedic and Asian methodologies for health and beauty.

Together, we inspire one another to create with joy and love, striving to exceed ourselves daily.

Frequently asked questions
Sizing details

We offer 2 lengths. Bengkung binds should be offered in multiple of widths and lengths as there is no universal body shape. A sizing chart is in each of our listing. The majority of our orders are for a stronger sewn edge. Previously we offered custom sewn lengths. If you would like a more custom fit wrap, please reach out so I may create that for you. From our customers, my clients, and the birth workers we supply product to we have found a single length to be wasteful or too short. My exclusive wrapping and knotting techniques of layering I professional instruct and train other birth workers in explain the necessity of different lengths and widths to honor the woman’s body whom is being wrapped in love so she is properly supported.

Care instructions

To preserve our non toxic eco safe dye- we recommend hand washing fray items in cool wate. The sewn may be machine washed gentle cycle ( cool water) with like colors. Remove promptly, hang dry.

Using the bathroom while bound

With proper wrapping there is a simple technique allowing you to quickly adjust your bind to do your business. No need to unwrap and rewrap with the technique I’ve come up with shared here:

https://youtu.be/7_4tX2BZwHI

What is the difference of a cut, raw, fray, or sewn bind?

They differ in durability and ease of washing. Traditionally the bind is sewn to provide the most beneficial support.

A pinked cut edge limits the amount of fray because the zigzag crosses the weave of the fabric. May be machine washedd on gentle cycle.

A torn (raw) edge will have a minimum fray edge and threads will still easily come off. Must be hand washed carefully.

A fray edge stabilizes the fabric more by removing lose threads 1/8 inch back to the tighter weave. Hand washing recommended.

Sewn edge should be a rolled serged edge. Ideally a small thin edge is less likely to catch. This finishes the edge giving it stability and strength. May be washed on gentle cycle in the washing machine with other laundry.
