About

Recycled yarn is a resource for 100% natural fiber knitting and weaving yarns, sold in whole recycled sweater bundles. Focusing on sustainable reuse of unused fashion items, this method is friendly to the environment, the animals these fibers came from, and a responsible practice for fiber artists.

I began recycling yarn in April of 2017 out of necessity as a means of continuing my making practices after graduating from VCUarts' Craft / Material Studies program. My fingers were not done weaving in large scale, and I needed high quality wool in large quantities. I thoroughly enjoy the process of recycling yarn, and have well surpassed my personal weaving needs because of it. Recycled Yarn has enabled me to share a sustainable product with my community in Richmond, VA and through Etsy, the world I am passionate about furthering both conversation and action towards sustainable creative pursuits and this virtual shop enables me to broaden the scope, so thank you for connecting with me!

As a lefty, I learned to crochet as a child by mirroring my right-handed mother’s movements and following her chant-like instructions that I still hum in my head as I work now. I hope these natural fiber yarns can bring you such peace.

Frequently asked questions
How can I save on shipping when purchasing multiple items at once?

Contact me with which listings you'd like together and I'll create a custom listing with everything in one box.

How do you calculate yarn weights?

I calculate yarn weights by applying the yarn's wpi (wraps per inch) to the chart below:

0 Lace: wpi of 35 or more
1 Fingering and sock: wpi of 19-34
2 Sport: wpi of 15-18
3 DK & light worsted: wpi of 12-14
4 Worsted & aran: wpi of 9-11
5 Bulky: wpi of 8-10
6 Super bulky: wpi of 7 or less

How do you calculate your pricing?

I time myself and calculate cost accordingly. I do not inflate for perceived value. A cotton sweater I spent 2 hours on would cost the same as an alpaca sweater I spent 2 hours on.
