I bought the earrings for my daughter. She loves them. They are beautiful and unique!

How I started ...

My name is Emily VanDerMaelen
I started making jewelry at the age of 12; My mother had bought me a small jewelry kit at a sidewalk sale. Years flew by, learning, and experiencing with different materials. When I first got my hands on sterling silver … I couldn’t stop. I’m now the age of 21 and still have a great passion for metal work. My father has built an addition onto his studio where I’m engaged in my works with natural sun light !! My jewelry studio is my sanctuary, a workable place for passion. Over the years my work has grown and changed with me, as I stray away from simple wire wrapped work to sheet metal and setting stones. It's exciting for me as I'm mostly self-taught in this form of art. All shapes are hand drawn on sheet metal and are hand cut with a jewelers saw, sanded, and filed to perfection hehe ... well almost, each piece is beautifully unique which I love because I'm big against factory made jewelry. My pieces each tell a story and are organically forged. I'm looking forward to producing more of my magic in the weeks, months, years to come.
I have been working at the Guilford Art Center since 2014 as a cashier as well as displaying the shop. I left this past summer in August to get back into making my jewelry, painting, illustrations and, fiber arts.
Currently, I am apprenticing with a goldsmith in town, Rebecca Bunting her website - http://www.rcbunting.com/. I have been excited and engaged in her teachings, eager to bring home new knowledge and experiment for myself in my own studio. I love the energy I get when I'm in a class with her. I have also taken classes at the Art Center with Linda Edwards, she really opened me up into the jewelry world. In addition, to jewelry classes I have taken illustration and pottery classes. Illustration is another passion of mine. My current project is called “Mini Illustrations” small original prints framed in vintage frames.
I have many interests in the world of ART. I am 21, and I'm slowing realizing life isn't a huge fairy tale as much as I'd like it to be, at times I find being an artist really tough, finding the money to help support my passion as well as living needs. Since a kid, my biggest dream was to be an artist. I never thought about college. I realized I don't need to go to school to be an artist, I am one. I have the talent and determination to achieve my goals. I just need a little help with guidance. There is no expiration date on education, and education should never be confused with intelligence.
I grew up on a small farm, and I have been inspired with the ever changing wildlife that surrounds me. The proof is found in my art :)

My artwork is currently on display at the
Guilford Art Center http://guilfordartcenter.org/ and
The Bird’s Nest Gallery http://www.thebirdnestsalon.com/
Peace, Love, and Happiness,

I grew up in my grandmother’s jewelry box, putting on her vintage necklaces playing dress up, like any little girl. But, little did I know that someday I would be a jeweler myself.
