Quality Craftsmanship and Unique Beauty

About My Shop:

Crista Smyth, owner and artist of Nature's Hand Driftwood Designs, has been crafting unique and beautiful driftwood handrails from her home workshop in California since 2006. Door pulls and cabinet pulls were added to her offerings shortly thereafter. Every creation is one-of-a-kind and crafted with great attention to detail along with being engineered for durability and functionality. High quality hardware is used to make sure your handrail or pull will stand up to everyday use. Every piece of driftwood, whether a small cabinet pull or a long handrail, is lovingly finished to be silky smooth to the touch. Every nook and cranny is sanded and smoothed after each coat of an oil-based finish to create a piece that is as beautiful to touch as it is to look at.

Crista works primarily through custom orders. Her Etsy shop has some items in stock, but if you don't find what you're looking for there, please email Crista with your questions and she will work with you to craft the perfect driftwood handrail or pull to your specifications.

About Me:

I come from a long line of carpenters, architects, and engineers on my father's side, and my mother was an artist. All of those trades are a part of me in one way or another. I have always enjoyed coming up with ideas and bringing them to life with my hands. Creating and problem-solving is at the core of my being.

After working in many different jobs as a young person, I finished my computer science degree in college and began my career as a software engineer. Software projects and programming fulfilled my desire to envision solutions to problems and create the software to carry them out. I took a hiatus from my programming career to raise my two sons full time and tackle large and small home projects. Over the years I acquired many skills and experience from the projects that I took on, preparing me well for my future career in driftwood design.

When I started making functional driftwood art, I found I needed to acquire more skills to properly photograph my items, code up my website, and make marketing materials. During this process I developed a love for Photoshop, and began a parallel career as a digital artist. In college I had specialized in computer graphics, so this was a perfect marriage of my interests and expertise. I love how digital art allows me to give life to the most elaborate ideas in my head and communicate them visually to the world. My nature is to keep trying new things and learning new skills, so I'm sure I'll have more items to offer in the coming years!

Returns and exchange details
Custom orders are non-refundable and non-returnable. I make every effort to understand a customer's wishes and comply with them to the best of my ability, however, every piece of driftwood is one-of-a-kind and by purchasing a custom order the customer is agreeing to accept the final product without returns or refunds.

For an in-stock item purchase you may return it within 30 days, at your cost, and I will issue you a refund for the item amount not including outbound shipping and handling when I receive the item in the condition in which it was sent to you.

I make every effort to package your item carefully. In the event that an item arrives damaged, send me photos of the packaging and the damaged item, so I can supply evidence to the shipping carrier for an insurance claim. Return the item to me within 14 days and I will replace the item with something similar or refund you the amount of the item plus your outbound and return shipping cost.
Payment
For all in-stock items, payment plus shipping and handling is due prior to shipping. For custom made items, my policy depends on the total price of the order. Custom items priced under $300 are paid in full prior to my starting work on the order and are non-refundable. For custom orders over $300 I require a non-refundable 50% deposit prior to starting work, and the final payment including shipping and handling is due prior to shipping. I will provide you with photos of the finished product for your approval prior to final payment.
Shipping
I try to estimate shipping on my listings as best I can, but for many items it is difficult to know the exact size of the package until it is sold and readied for shipping. Because of this, I may overestimate shipping, in which case I will refund the portion overpaid to you through Etsy. Underestimated shipping will not be your responsibility--I will absorb the loss.

Shipping is quoted for US orders only. Shipping in the US is primarily based on size and shape of the package, as opposed to weight as it was in the past. Since my items tend to be bulky, I have found that the shipping costs are prohibitive for international shipping.
Additional policies and FAQs
Custom orders are welcome! Please contact me through Etsy or contact [!at] natureshand.us. For custom orders under $300, full payment is due before work on the item begins and is non-refundable. For orders $300 and over, work on a custom order will begin after I receive a 50% non-refundable deposit, and the finished item(s) will be shipped to you upon receipt of the remaining balance plus shipping and handling costs. After the initial payment, photos will be sent to you showing the specific driftwood pieces that will be used so that your consent can be given. Prior to the final payment, photos of the final product will be sent to you as well.

I often get requests for specific colors or for two or more items in a custom order to match in color. I don't stain my driftwood so the color of an item is that of the natural color of the wood after sanding and the application of a clear matte, rubbed in, oil-based varnish. Raw driftwood will appear to be silverish/white in color due to the fact that it sits on a beach getting bleached by the sun. This patina is very thin and is removed when I sand the driftwood, revealing the natural wood tone of the driftwood piece underneath. Finishing makes the wood appear a little darker, like wetting a piece of wood. No two pieces will be an exact match in color and I can't guarantee a certain color. If color is important to you, I can sand off a small patch on a candidate driftwood piece and wet it before you commit to a certain piece so you have an idea of what the final color will be. It often happens, however, that a piece has variegated colors that are only revealed when I have sanded the entire piece Therefore, it is important to use the sanded patch as a general guideline, and to embrace the colors that your individually chosen piece of driftwood offers you.

Frequently asked questions
Color and Finish

I don't stain my driftwood as it absorbs stain unevenly and stain looks unnatural on driftwood. The color is that of the natural color of the wood after sanding and application of a clear, low gloss, oil-based finish. Driftwood is initially silverish because it gets bleached by the sun, but this light patina is very thin and removed when I sand the driftwood, revealing the natural wood tone. I can't guarantee any specific color. I can sand off a patch of a piece that you like and wet it to estimate the final color before you choose a piece, but it may have other colors revealed when I sand the entire piece after you've placed your order. Be willing to embrace the one-of-a-kind color and beauty of your creation.
