About

If You Can Imagine It Made From Driftwood, I Will Make It For You!

About My Shop:

Nature's Hand Driftwood Designs started with one small handrail for my own home in 2005. While visiting family on one of the San Juan Islands in Washington state, I fell in love with the gorgeous pieces of driftwood covering the beaches there. I brought home some pieces of madrone and proceeded to make my first handrail. I was fascinated by the dark red color, deep curving grain and pleasing aroma of the wood as I worked with it. The finished handrail was so beautiful, and I enjoyed the process of making it so much, that I decided to make a business out of my new found passion.

Driftwood is very special to me. Each piece offers a unique shape, feel, smell and color, often mimicking other creations of nature. The average time a piece of driftwood has been living in the ocean to be perfectly shaped by nature is 50 years! Beauty takes time. Over the years, I have made many different items from driftwood and enjoy every minute of the idea, design and creation process. I especially like making custom orders, since I can create the perfect piece to the customer's specifications and I know that they will love it, too!

In addition to my driftwood art, I create digital fine art, which I sell as prints and greeting cards. My full collection of digital art can be purchased online at FineArtAmerica, and I have selected a few of my favorites to sell to my Etsy customers as high quality greeting cards that can be specialized for your occasion.

About Me:

I come from a long line of carpenters, architects, and engineers on my father's side, and my mother was an artist. All of those trades are a part of me in one way or another. I have always enjoyed coming up with ideas and bringing them to life with my hands. Creating and problem-solving is at the core of my being. As a child I was constantly writing books, making comics, drawing pictures...anything to satisfy my creative itch.

After working in many different jobs as a young person, I finished my computer science degree in college and began my career as a software engineer. Software projects and programming fulfilled my desire to envision solutions to problems and create the software to carry them out. I took a hiatus from my programming career to raise my two sons full time, as well as work on the items on our family's "Honey-do" list (a job more suited to my skills than my brilliant but not very handy husband's!). Over the years I acquired more skills and experience from the projects that I took on, preparing me well for my future career in driftwood design.

When I started making functional driftwood art, I found I needed to acquire more skills to properly photograph my items, code up my website, and make marketing materials. During this process I developed a love for Photoshop, and began a parallel career as a digital artist. In college I had specialized in computer graphics, so this was a perfect marriage of my interests and expertise. I love how digital art allows me to give life to the most elaborate ideas in my head and communicate them visually to the world.

My nature is to keep trying new things and learning new skills. Because I love to create with my hands, and to create in a virtual world on my computer, I can split my time between these two opposites and achieve a balance that suits me just fine.

Returns and exchange details
I want you to be happy with your purchase! If for any reason you do not wish to keep your item, you may return it within 30 days, at your cost, and I will issue you a refund for the item amount not including outbound shipping and handling when I receive the item in the condition in which it was sent to you.

I make every effort to package your item carefully, however, in the event that an item arrives damaged, please return the item to me within 30 days and I will replace the item with something similar or refund you the amount of the item plus your outbound and return shipping cost.
Payment
For all in-stock items, payment plus shipping and handling is due prior to shipping. For custom made items, my policy depends on the total price of the order. Custom items priced under $300 are paid in full prior to my starting work on the order. For custom orders over $300 I require a non-refundable 50% deposit prior to starting work, and the final payment including shipping and handling is due prior to shipping. I will provide you with photos of the finished product for your approval prior to final payment.
Shipping
I try to estimate shipping on my listings as best I can, but for many items it is difficult to know the exact size of the package until it is sold and readied for shipping. Because of this, I may overestimate shipping, in which case I will refund the portion overpaid to you through Etsy. Underestimated shipping will not be your responsibility--I will absorb the loss.

Shipping is quoted for US orders only. Shipping in the US is primarily based on size and shape of the package, as opposed to weight as it was in the past. Since my items tend to be bulky, I have found that the shipping costs are prohibitive for international shipping.
Additional policies and FAQs
Custom orders are welcome! Please contact me through Etsy or contact [!at] natureshand.us. For custom orders under $300, full payment is due before work on the item begins. For orders $300 and over, work on a custom order will begin after I receive a 50% deposit, and the finished item(s) will be shipped to you upon receipt of the remaining balance plus shipping and handling costs. After the initial payment, photos will be sent to you showing the specific driftwood pieces that will be used so that your consent can be given. Prior to the final payment, photos of the final product will be sent to you as well.

I often get requests for specific colors or for two or more items in a custom order to match in color. I don't stain my driftwood so the color of an item is that of the natural color of the wood after sanding and the application of a clear matte, rubbed in, oil-based varnish. Raw driftwood will appear to be silverish/white in color due to the fact that it sits on a beach getting bleached by the sun. This patina is very thin and is removed when I sand the driftwood, revealing the natural wood tone of the driftwood piece underneath. Finishing makes the wood appear a little darker, like wetting a piece of wood. No two pieces will be an exact match in color and I can't guarantee a certain color. If color is important to you, I can sand off a small patch on a candidate driftwood piece and wet it before you commit to a certain piece so you have an idea of what the final color will be. It often happens, however, that a piece has variegated colors that are only revealed when I have sanded the entire piece Therefore, it is important to use the sanded patch as a general guideline, and to embrace the colors that your individually chosen piece of driftwood offers you.

Frequently asked questions
Color of Driftwood Creations

I often get requests for specific colors which I can honor only to a limited degree. I don't stain my driftwood so the color is that of the natural color of the wood after sanding and finishing. Driftwood will initially appear to be silverish in color because it sits on a beach getting bleached by the sun, but this light patina is very thin and is removed when I sand the driftwood, revealing the natural wood tone. I can't guarantee any specific color. I can sand off a patch of a piece that you like and wet it to estimate the final color before you choose a piece, but it may have other colors revealed when I sand the entire piece after you've placed your order. Be willing to embrace the one-of-a-kind color and beauty of your creation.
