About

High Quality Handmade Gifts

Hi! My name is Lisa. I am my parent’s favorite daughter, my brother’s only sister, the wife of my high school sweetheart, my sons’ mommy, and my dog’s best friend. I was born in Chicago, grew up in Kansas, and call Texas home. I’m notorious for making short stories long, sending novels as texts, and leaving five minute voicemails. I prefer the book over the movie, driving over flying, summer more than winter, flowers over chocolates, and coffee more than tea. The name “Navy Mango” is complete nonsense. If you clicked this ABOUT page to read a clever story about how my shop name came to be, I haven’t made one up yet. Sorry.

I do have a story to tell you about the Jesse Trees, though. The birth of my first child sparked a fresh desire in me to be intentional with my faith. At Christmastime I even participated in an online project to make an advent calendar so our family could count down the days until Jesus’ birthday. Instead of the more traditional Christmas colors and ornaments, I designed mine as a throwback to vintage advent calendars that your sweet grandmother might have made. I updated it with modern colors and fun ornaments. I proudly posted a photo of my completed advent calendar to facebook and people began placing orders for them even though I wasn’t selling them. One friend asked if I also offered a “biblical” option. Her question inspired me to do some research and that’s when I first learned about the beautiful Jesse Tree tradition.

If you don’t already know what a Jesse Tree is, a quick Google search will tell you that it’s an ancient advent tradition named after Jesse, the father of King David. Biblical symbols or drawings representing the ancestry of Jesus Christ, either in faith or bloodline, were added one by one onto a twig or branch for each day of Advent. As each ornament was added, a bible story was passed on to explain the symbol. Obviously, the ancient Jesse Tree tradition is nothing new nor is it my original invention. But in 2009 the Original Handmade Jesse Tree™ from Navy Mango was the first of its kind to be designed, created and sold. I thought maybe a completely hand-sewn biblical advent calendar with kid-friendly pockets and ornaments and a coordinating daily bible verse might help others to remember their sweet grandmas and keep Christ the focus during their Christmas traditions too. So I put them up for sale as pre-orders in my Etsy Shop. The response was overwhelming and humbling!

If you’re still reading, I am oh so grateful. If not for YOU, I would not have this story to tell. As a wife to a hard-working, self-employed entrepreneur who also has a corporate day job, and as a stay-at-home mother to two adventurous little boys, this is a business I do not feel equipped to manage well on my own. I was not able to keep up with the wait-lists each year nor could I possibly make so many Jesse Trees with my own two hands. And yet – God continues to move this project along a little bit more every year! He is faithful to send me creative inspiration and routine motivation. He has been gracious to grow the business steadily but slowly and He always sends just the right kind of help exactly when I need it. From labor, supplies and materials, to packaging and branding, to legal counsel and business advice – I can see Him taking care of this business. This is how I know it’s HIS thing and not MINE. I’m prayerfully trying to be a good steward of what He’s entrusted to me. The Original Handmade Jesse Tree™ has evolved over the last six years into something bigger and more important than I ever thought it could be. Pieces of my heart and soul leave with each ornament shipped. This is a labor of love and a ministry too. My prayer is that these heirloom-quality gifts will help foster a holy curiosity in kids of all ages as they learn about how much God loves them and why He sent his son to earth on that very first Christmas. I hope it kindles faith and starts a meaningful tradition that lasts in families for generations.
