About

This Is My Art, My Way.

As a girl, I struggled to find my personal talent. My grandmother always said, "everyone has a talent, something they are great at, you just have to find it". My grandmother was great at sewing. My mother is a great artist, and good at everything it seems. She has done everything from murals on restaurant walls, portraits, sculpture, to beading and furniture making. I tried to follow in her footsteps, painting and sculpting. I was perfectly acceptable in these arts, but I just didn't feel connected to it.

In 2010, a friend brought me a crocheted heart for Valentines Day. A light went off in my head. "I could do this!" I thought. And I did. I went to the local craft store and bought supplies, doggedly watched video tutorial after tutorial. It was hard, at first, to coordinate my hands with my yarn and hooks, but I quickly became obsessed. Simply creating a simple washcloth brought me so much joy. "I made this, this is my talent!" I thought. My grandmother would be so proud.

Quickly, I taught myself more and more techniques, studying how each stitch married into one another, creating this object, this shape, this piece of art! I worked at perfecting my art, learning colorwork, intarsia, steeking, socks, and lace. I bought books, joined forums, watched podcasts, anything I could learn about knitting, I wanted to know it!

I wanted to share my love of crochet, so I became a member of the local chapter of The Noggineers, a volunteer organization that provides hand made hats to premature babies in the NICU. I loved the thought of my hats keeping a tiny head warm.

I had a beautiful baby girl in 2012, Neeley Spring, the shop's namesake. It was important to me that I stay home with her, so I turned an extra room in my home into a yarn shop, Neeley's Knits, in 2013. I sell yarn, teach lessons, and have knit nights. Neeley even participates. She loves interacting with the customers and helping them pick yarn. She has very good taste!

I entered the county fair in 2013, winning 5 blue ribbons, 2 second place ribbons and one white ribbon. I was so proud. I felt like I had something I could hang in my shop, something to show for the countless hours of knitting, crocheting and crafting. Something to say, "this is my art, my way, and I am good!"

I started dying my own yarn in 2013, in an old turkey roasting pan, with a wooden spoon and a little luck. I started with Kool Aid, marveling at how the yarn could turn from a clean bright white into such bright, fun colors! It is a little like an abstract painting, a little of this color, a lot of that one. You never really know how it will turn out until it is dry. To me, that is part of the fun. Letting the colors and yarn do what it will, not having control. I like to paint my yarn, splatter it with color, squish it and dip it. Each skein is different, and I like that. But it is art, no two skeins are exactly alike, and every one is beautiful in its own way. That is the difference in hand dyed yarns, each one is carefully thought out and made with love.

I encourage you all to contact me with any questions or comments. Imagine me as your local yarn store girl at the front counter, eager to talk with you! You can contact me through Facebook, my blog, www.blogspot.com/NeeleysKnits or through Etsy. I'd love to talk to you!

If you would like your yarn in a cake instead of a skein, please leave a message when purchasing or send me a convo. I usually pack and ship as soon as possible, so if you delay in sending the message, I may not get it in time.

All monitors are different, so yarns may look slightly different in person. I try my best to put the colors in the description of the yarn.

Superwash yarns are machine washable but I would recommend hand washing for longevity of the garment. I wash and set the yarns as thoroughly as possible but I recommend washing the item separately the first time.

I do use vinegar to set the dyes, so there is a chance that the yarn may have a vinegar scent. You can wash the yarn in Dawn dish soap or wool wash and the smell should dissipate completely.
