Announcement    We're proud to present our first book! At New Colossus Press, we are dedicated to publishing books that promote civic-mindedness and openheartedness among readers, young and old. We established the press with a single goal: To put goodness into the world, where it can blossom and become whatever we make it—together.

That's why your purchase of WHEN WE MARCH will support the same civic values the book champions. We, the creators, pledge to use the proceeds from this book as a tool to ensure that every child growing up in the U.S. knows that their voice matters, that their neighbor’s voice matters, and that we must work together to create a country we're proud to call home. About the creators ...

Kimberly Rae Gilbert: I'm a professional writer and editor. Usually, I write about how the adult world works. But I was moved to draft this book for children after my cousin Shannon and I attended the 2017 Women's March in Denver, Colorado. Of the record numbers of people who participated in marches around the globe on January 21, 2017, many were children. And even more kids helped from the sidelines—lettering homemade signs, painting t-shirts, knitting pink hats, and cheering on their adults. It was these children—tomorrow’s thinkers, creators, and influencers—I was thinking of when I jotted down the first words.

Shannon Frabbiele: I'm a teacher by profession, but cartooning has been a hobby since grade school. I lined the margins of school notebooks with doodles, and my best friend and I passed comic strips about our lives back and forth. It seemed to me at the time that when you lack the words to express yourself you might have the drawing. At the Women’s March, I saw people everywhere had the words; it became my mission to create illustrations that represent the energy of that day, the commitment of the people, and to say to the readers of this book, and young people everywhere, that the wishes and dreams we think about in the quiet moments of our lives have a place in this world to be explored, shared, and celebrated.
