About

Art for Extraordinary Everyday Living

Welcome to Nicole Kristiana on Etsy! My collection includes zen wall prints and notecards featuring whimsical animals and marine creatures to bring color and inspiration to your life!

I studied art for over 12 years at five universities in the US and internationally in Italy. I live in Bellefonte, a town of creative folks in Delaware, with my husband Ross, our 85 pound "puppy" Barnaby and cat Miss Kitty. Bellevue is a great place to live; we have a wonderful park where I take Barnaby for his daily walk and sometimes take photos for inspiration. On Fridays at 5pm, we end our workday and Ross, Barnaby and I walk up to town. Our stops include a check in at Bellefonte Arts Gallery where I have some of my work on sale to say hello to the owner Valerie and see what artworks have sold, then we head across the street to the Bellefonte Café. Barnaby hangs out on the porch with us while we eat our traditional Friday lamb curry! There’s live music too, so, happily, I drink my wine, and listen to a set before walking back home.

A few years ago, I took an inventory of things that made me happy and decided to combine them all in my paintings. It worked! The joy has caught on and Nicole Kristiana Studio came to life! My "happiness list" includes various animals I learned about through watching PBS documentaries and I work in elements of patterns and designs from around the world including zen-inspired asian artwork, rhythmic lines and butterflies. The paintings are done in various media including watercolors, gouache, oil and inks which gives spectacular depth and eye catching color to the final pieces.

My days typically start early and my work is done in my dining room/studio with NPR on in the background. We watch a lot of streaming documentaries since we cut off our cable service and I typically have my laptop on too while watching so I can research painting and artists to help me grow in my art practice. The dog and cat often keep me company under the antique drafting table while I’m working.

I really love my studio space! There is a huge inspiration board pinned with bits of paper and printouts of online finds. There’s also a long wall of bookshelves holding supplies and inventory; it’s all cherry wood and has a lovely warm feeling. I primarily use M Graham paints and carefully separated sable brushes for both oil and gouache. There are tons of glass jars with brushes and painting mediums on the tables.

The prints in my collection are produced in a modern day printmaking process. The original paintings are made by layering gouache, watercolor, and a variety of ink in each artwork. This work blends classical training and current conceptual art together in a wonderfully expressive way.

I incorporate yoga and meditation into my daily routine because I feel that taking care of the body and mind is important for positively influencing my art!

Why the butterfly?

After I learned the art of letting things go, butterflies started showing up in my life with amazing frequency! Around this same time, I discovered for certain that creating art was the passion of my life. The butterfly evolves. Like art, like life, the butterfly symbolizes change, and beautiful change at that. My art is ever evolving and so is the butterfly. The butterfly represents being free and I feel true freedom when I’m creating.

When I'm painting I work back and forth much like the movements of the butterfly. The butterfly also symbolizes delight through the appreciation, evolvement and freedom of being alive. Nicole Kristiana Studio is like a delightful butterfly for me and that is why I call it the "Ebullient Butterfly".

The focus is meditative as I delve into the layers of the piece that is evolving and coming to life in front of me. It made a lot of sense to include the butterfly symbol within my artworks. Every year, I update the symbol to signify evolvement and to celebrate the passage of time.

I have participated in hundreds of shows and I have my works in several retail locations. Please contact me if you are a retailer and are interested in stocking items from my collection!
