5 out of 5 starsI really like the glazing on this mug. It kind of has a vintage look to it. I do find the handle a bit awkward. It's almost room for three fingers. I have average size women's hands. I think it could be smaller (2 fingers) or larger (all four). These are just preferences, we are all so differently sized and shaped. The glaze is so milky! Really love it overall. I like watching what designs you come up with next!

It all starts on the potters wheel.....

The first skull mug incarnation- 2007. Some little pirates in the house needed some skull tableware.
-
Being a studio potter means making many, many pots!
-
Pots are fired after they have dried completely. They then are called bisque ware. After this stage comes the glazing.

The glow inside the kiln. This is about 2300 degrees F.
Hands In Clay
My art has taken many forms throughout the years from ceramic sculptures, tiles, plates and platters to abstract paintings, prints, and collages. What has remained a constant throughout all of my work is the exploration of surface, line and texture. I am fascinated by the effects of heat and fire on glazed surfaces and enjoy the process of the kiln working its magic on my work.
I make my pots on the potters wheel using a very durable white stoneware clay.
My glazes are custom made by me in my studio. I view them as my painter's palette and my pottery as the paintings. I enjoy blending and experimenting with glazes to find unusual combinations. I fire my kiln very hot, to cone 10 (around 2350 degrees Fahrenheit) so the glazes really melt and flow which gives the skulls and other designs a lot of movement and life. I will often glaze fire the ware twice, sometimes three or four times, to get a richly layered and complex surface texture.
It is fulfilling work to make an artful object that is meant for everyday use and is also affordable so that many people can enjoy it. I hope you enjoy looking around my Etsy shop.
Cheers!
Nicole

Additional policies and FAQs
My work is made using a durable stoneware clay and fired very, very hot for superior durability. You do not have to baby it or worry about it. But, with that being said, I do have a few recommendations.
1. Please do not drive with pottery in your hand or in your car in general. I've had several people break their cups when they [the cups] rolled out of the car [or maybe the person fell out of the car, don't know]. It's also bad to have a mug full of hot coffee or tea flying around in the car if you stop suddenly. Also, spilled milk in cars smells really bad and your car will smell like sour milk forever.
2. In order to avoid ever shocking the ware, do not subject handmade pottery to any type of sudden, extreme heating including over-microwaving or sticking in a hot oven if the item is cold- like don't put your iced coffee you left in your mug, in the freezerr, into the oven or microwave to warm it up. Be nice to your handmade pottery.
3. Washing handmade wares by hand is recommended. I do put my work in the dishwasher and it's been fine, though.
4. Okay.... you can put most of my work in the microwave and it will be fine, unless you forget about it and leave it in there for a long time. Don't put a stick of butter in it and set it to melt for 10 minutes. It might shock the ware or the glaze surface. DO NOT microwave any of my pots that are thick, like plates or large serving bowls. They are too thick or have a large surface area that may heat unevenly in the a microwave which might crack them.
Email me if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Nicole
