About

Nightingale Fibers is a Labor of Love

Nightingale Fibers was born in 2007 and is a reflection of my two callings: as a nurse/nurse midwife and as a lover of the fiber arts. Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) was a nurse during the Crimean War and is responsible for the founding of what we refer to as the Nursing Profession. The names of my yarns are nurses who were pioneers in the field of nursing and have been the guiding light for me and all nurses.

I love colors found in the garden and in nature and try to reflect what I see in the colors of my yarns. All the yarns are dyed by me in small batches, usually 2-4 skeins, with professional acid dyes. I love to experiment and see what comes out of the dye pot, but I also have repeatable colorways. I also knit with the yarns I dye so I know what a customer can expect.

I live in beautiful New Hampshire with my life partner, David. He is a retired hospital pharmacist and I am winding down my career as a nurse midwife. We enjoy going to fiber festivals and fairs together to set up shop. He has become very familiar with yarn, knitting terms and what each accessory does! He is invaluable as the "check out guy" and I love talking with fellow knitters, spinners and felters and see the gorgeous creations they are wearing. We hope to do more shows after I retire.

Please feel free to contact me, give me feedback or to request a special order.

Love life and knit

I learned to knit from my mother when I was seven and renewed my love of knitting as an adult. I started dyeing yarn and fiber after taking a class and I have never looked back. I have been a nurse since 1978 and a Nurse Midwife since 1992.
