    Wood-fired urban pottery

After years of daily work as a production thrower in Prague and London I now make ceramic pots I design and produce myself, in the center of Prague. My intention is to make everyday objects beautiful and highly functional. Recently I treated myself to making large bowls and vases, often in the form of bottles. Knowing these are hardly the most used vessels gives me the freedom to make each of them unique while very simple and similar in style. I am an urban potter and I think these new vessels show it. I throw nearly all my pots from porcelain now, make my own celadon, temmoku a shino glazes and fire in a wood firing kiln in South Bohemia. There are not only large pieces in my production, I also started making tea pots, tea bowls and all sorts of small vessels as well. Balancing work and family life is often hard but I still consider myself lucky.

My production reached the stage where city potting became too small for me and got lucky enough to be able to build a wood firing kiln in the countryside. I still throw everything on a pottery wheel only now it is nearly exclusively porcelain. I make my own celadon, shino and temmoku glazes and fire 100 km away from the wheel. The kiln is small and so are my kids, so I throw during the winter and fire several firings during summer school holiday.
Each firing takes about 17 hours of close attention, chopping wood and very frequent stoking. It is very demanding process but super rewarding and I know I don’t ever want to do anything else. I throw small pots very thinly and with the pale glazes they are beautifully translucent. Larger pieces challenge my throwing skills and I love making them, too.
