About NiseyKnits
Playing with two sticks and some string
Coming from Ghana in West Africa, I never dreamt that I would get into knitting and love it this much. I had read about it in various books but never seen it in action. In middle school a crocheting wave hit all the schools and we all went crazy for the metal hook and some acrylic yarn.
That was the extent of my crafting experience...until May 2006 when my supervisor at the college library where I worked gave me a pair of US #8 needles, a ball of yarn, and an hour-long knitting lesson as my graduation present. After graduation I spent one year conducting research on the responses to domestic violence in five countries. While traveling I took advantage of all the airport wait times and layovers to practice my newly acquired knitting skill (and watched Bollywood movies to keep me company). By the time I got back to the US I was not only addicted to knitting, but I had also accumulated a pretty sizable stash from all the countries I visited.
I started my Etsy Shop during the 8th month of my pregnancy, almost as part of the "nesting" ritual that happens to most mothers. A lot of people had been encouraging me to join Etsy, but I was scared and unsure of putting a formal "business" title on what I was doing. I wanted to share my knitted items with other people, and there's only so many hats and scarves that friends and family could wear. That "nesting" feeling was the push I needed to go out there and take the risk.
And so far, I'm loving it. :)
