About

Why I Do, What I'm Doing - Nora's Vintage Attic

I have been a collector of vintage and antique items for many, many years just because I love old things. It's a genuine love of keepsakes of times past. It's hard for me to decide, What to Keep and What to Let Go. I have no more wall space or shelf space, corner space, every nook and cranny is tastefully filled in our home.

On a spring day in 2012, I received a call from my sister-in-law, who needed help going through her mother’s estate items. Her mother had been an avid Art Collector since the 1940s. Among her things was a pottery figurine, signed by Helen Cordero of the Cochiti Pueblo Tribe. She was renowned for her storyteller pottery figurines. I just remembered seeing something similar on Antiques Road Show. I picked out several items that I thought might have some value.

Oh my goodness, I really knew nothing, just a hunch. I took photos and notes, I went home and did the research on each item. Due to my findings, we arranged a meeting with an appraiser of American Indian and African Tribal artifacts on Antiques Road Show. We took a road trip to meet with Mr. Buxton, whose office is located in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. What an amazing adventure and fun trip! It was an eye opening experience for both of us. Several of the items we took to be appraised were by famous artists and had considerable value.

Beyond Collector and Decorator Status!
I had so much fun helping my sister-in-law. The news got out, it seemed like a lot of folks (cousins, friends) were asking me to help them go through their stuff. After things settled down, I decided to buy and sell vintage. I found Etsy when looking for avenues and options to sell on the internet. I had just retired from a Procurement Specialist position at a Nuclear Power Plant, performing similar types of activities for the company, buying and selling, doing research, photography, designing databases, creating item descriptions, just on a more technical nature. Shopping and Selling Vintage is a lot more fun. Other past experience many years ago, Customer Service, Competitive Shopper, Advertiser for a Department Store. Many of my past employment experiences have really helped me with the activities involved running my little shop on Etsy.

I started my business from a large closet on the 2nd story of our 1884 home, which I had named Nora's Vintage Attic years ago, before Etsy. Within a year, I had out grown my closet. Then out of the blue, my hubby informed me, he' was going to construct a new shed for "his stuff". I was serious about my little business and had no room left in my storage area. After much discussion, he offered a portion (one quarter) of his new building for my business. He divided my portion into two rooms. One side I decorated with vintage items, pretty wallpaper and lace curtains, where I keep all of the items that I have listed on Etsy. The other, is my receiving area, where I work to get my vintage items ready to list. Finally, A Girl Shop!

I'm not getting rich, but I am having fun. I don't think I shall ever tire of doing this; I love the shopping adventures, the whole process of getting an item ready to list and hopefully sell; my customers have been fabulous. There are so many nice shops on Etsy and Shop Owners. So, if you can't find it here, check them out. I'm sure you will find that special item somewhere on Etsy!
