Op het moment dat ik dit schrijf, studeer ik al meer dan tien jaar astrologie. Hoewel er talloze niches binnen het vakgebied zijn waarin je je kunt specialiseren, ontwikkelde ik al vroeg een bijzondere interesse in de Noordelijke Maansknoop: de poolster van ons leven die ons wijst op onze karmische groei.

In de tien jaar dat ik astrologische dienstverlening doe, heb ik gezien hoe de openbaring van de Noordelijke Maansknoop vrienden en cliënten hielp om hun ongelukkige baan op te zeggen en naar de andere kant van het land te verhuizen. Uiteindelijk leidde dit ertoe dat hun leven zich naadloos ontwikkelde tot een succes. Ze konden op een meer vreedzame manier de overstap maken naar een partnerschap en ouderschap. Ze konden hun creativiteit verkennen en hun ware roeping ontdekken. Daarnaast konden ze diepgewortelde psychospirituele blokkades blootleggen die hun vooruitgang hun hele leven hadden belemmerd.

De Maanknopen vertegenwoordigen de evolutie van ons bewustzijn: de reden waarom we fysiek incarneerden, de levensles die we moeten leren. Ze vatten ons essentiële Zelf samen en alles wat we in dit leven en andere levens daarvoor (of gewoon eerder in dit leven, als je reïncarnatie niet begrijpt) zijn geweest, gedaan, gedacht en ervaren. Technisch gezien is de Noordelijke Maansknoop een wiskundig punt, gedefinieerd door de plaats waar de baan van de Maan de ecliptica kruist, het pad van de Zon vanuit het perspectief van de Aarde. De Maan vertegenwoordigt onze onderbewuste werking: het ego zoals het is gegroeid, wonden en vaardigheden heeft opgebouwd en zich heeft ontwikkeld; de ecliptica geeft onze intenties aan voor wat we materieel in dit leven zullen manifesteren. De Maanknopen geven daarom het verband aan tussen waar we zijn geweest en waar we naartoe moeten gaan. Ze komen het dichtst in de buurt van een kaart voor ons eigen specifieke, individuele leven.

Wat ik zo mooi vind aan astrologie, is dat het een archetypisch systeem is dat de paradox van dichotomie aanpakt: het idee dat elke dualiteit uiteindelijk oplost in een singulariteit. Elk paar tegenstellingen is slechts de keerzijde van dezelfde medaille, en zonder beide zijden zou de munt waardeloos zijn. Er zijn twaalf sterrenbeelden, maar deze bevinden zich op zes assen: elk teken heeft zijn tegengestelde en elk paar tegenstellingen neemt tegengestelde benaderingen aan van hetzelfde diepe verlangen.

Elke knoopas streeft dus hetzelfde na, maar de manier waarop we dat instinctief proberen te bereiken (met onze Zuidelijke Maansknoop) werkt niet meer voor ons. We hebben het te ver doorgevoerd en nu is het tijd om de balans te vinden door de tegenovergestelde aanpak te leren. Daar komt de Noordelijke Maansknoop om de hoek kijken.

De Noordelijke Maansknoop symboliseert wat we in dit leven moeten leren, terwijl de Zuidelijke Maansknoop ons vertelt over onze natuurlijke gaven en onze karmische schuld. De Zuidelijke Maansknoop weerspiegelt ons verleden, zowel positief als negatief, en de comfortzone waar we verslavend vastlopen. De Noordelijke Maansknoop is onze ongemakszone: wat (meestal) niet vanzelfsprekend of gemakkelijk komt, waar we weerstand tegen bieden, wat we nodig hebben om volwassen te worden. We zijn in het verleden tot het uiterste gegaan en onze taak is nu om te gebruiken wat we hebben geleerd en tegelijkertijd die overdaad te compenseren. Het gaat er nooit om de Zuidelijke Maansknoop volledig achter ons te laten, maar om te leren de as op een gezonde manier in evenwicht te brengen.

De Noordelijke Maansknoop is geen lotsbestemming, het is niet onvermijdelijk; er moet bewust aan gewerkt worden, hoewel niet altijd op de manier die we verwachten. Sommige paden zijn makkelijker dan andere, afhankelijk van de unieke geboortehoroscoop en persoonlijke plaatsingen: een Noordelijke Maansknoop op aarde voor iemand met een zware aardhoroscoop kan makkelijker zijn, maar voeg daar een vuurplaatsing aan toe die de knoopas vierkant maakt, of enkele moeilijke aspecten met de heerser van de Noordelijke Maansknoop, en je hebt een aantal specifieke uitdagingen te overwinnen. Het hangt allemaal af van de horoscoop.

De Maansknopen veranderen slechts ongeveer elke 18 maanden van teken, dus de tekens worden vaak gedeeld met de meerderheid van onze leeftijdsgenoten. Wat echter specifiek is - tot op het precieze moment van je geboorte - is het huis waarin de Noordelijke Maansknoop zich bevindt. Ik heb gemerkt dat de huisplaatsing vaak zelfs relevanter is voor iemands problemen dan het teken.

Je zult echter informatie over de Noordelijke Maansknoop vinden via de huizen die ontbreken en op zijn best formulematig zijn. De meeste huisinterpretaties voor de Noordelijke Maansknoop kopiëren slechts de interpretatie voor het heersende teken van dat huis in plaats van de specifieke uitdagingen van het teken in dat huis nauwkeurig uit te leggen. (Elk teken is geassocieerd met een specifieke planeet en huis, en hoewel deze heerschappijen essentiële kennis zijn bij interpretatie, vertegenwoordigen ze elk verschillende aspecten.) Met andere woorden, de meeste interpretaties vermengen het teken met het huis in plaats van ze als afzonderlijke te behandelen.

Voor zover ik weet is er geen online bron of boek die de Noordelijke Maansknoop in elk teken EN huis specifiek interpreteert. Dit is essentieel, omdat een Noordelijke Maansknoop in Steenbok in het 6e huis heel anders is dan een Noordelijke Maansknoop in Steenbok in het 11e huis, bijvoorbeeld. En hoe zit het met knoopinversies - wanneer de Noordelijke Maansknoop in het tegenovergestelde huis staat van het huis dat van nature door zijn teken wordt geregeerd, zoals een Noordelijke Maansknoop in Steenbok in het 4e huis? Elk van de 144 combinaties van teken en huis vereist een unieke analyse.

Dat was mijn doel bij het schrijven van deze gidsen. Begrijpen dat er diep onbewuste blinde vlekken in onze psyche zitten en hoe we die kunnen doorbreken om ons hoogste, ware potentieel te bereiken – om ons karmische pad van ascensie te volgen – is hoe kennis van onze unieke Noordelijke Maansknoop-positie, per teken en huis, ons bevrijdt om de vruchten van levens te plukken.

As of this writing, I have been studying astrology for more than ten years. While there are numerous niches within the field in which one may specialize, early on I developed a particular interest in the North Node: the north star of our lives that points us toward our karmic growth.

In my decade of astrological service, I have seen the revelation of the North Node guide friends and clients to leave unhappy jobs and move across the country only to see their life unfold seamlessly into its best; to transition more peacefully into partnership and parenthood; to explore their creativity and discover their true vocation; to uncover deeply rooted psychospiritual blocks that had thwarted their progress all their lives.

The Nodes of the Moon represent the evolution of our consciousness: the reason we incarnated physically, the life lesson we’re meant to learn. They sum up our essential Selves and all we have been, done, thought, and experienced, in this lifetime and others before (or simply earlier in this life, if you don’t understand reincarnation). Technically, the North Node is a mathematical point defined by the place where the orbit of the Moon crosses the ecliptic, the path of the Sun from the point of view of the Earth. The Moon represents our subconscious workings: the ego as it has grown, accumulated wounds and skills, and evolved; the ecliptic indicates our intentions for what we will materially manifest in this life. The Nodes of the Moon therefore indicate the nexus between where we’ve been and where we’re meant to go. They are the closest thing we have to a map for our own specific, individual life.

Something I love about astrology is that it is an archetypal system that deals with the paradox of dichotomy: the notion that every duality ultimately dissolves into a singularity. Every pair of opposites are just flip sides of the same coin, and without both sides, the currency would be worthless. There are twelve zodiac signs, but these sit on six axes: each sign has its opposite and each pair of opposites takes opposing approaches to the same deep desire.

Every nodal axis is therefore seeking the same thing, but the way we instinctively go about getting it (with our South Node) is no longer working for us. We’ve overdone it and now it’s time find balance by learning the opposite approach. That’s where the North Node comes in.

The North Node signifies what we have to learn in this lifetime, while the South Node opposite tells us both about our natural gifts and our karmic debt. The South Node reflects our past, both positive and negative, and the comfort zone where we get addictively stuck. The North Node is our discomfort zone: what does not (typically) come naturally or easily, what we resist, what we need in order to mature. We went to excess in the past and our task now is to use what we’ve learned while compensating for that excess. It is never about entirely leaving the South Node behind, but learning to balance the axis in a healthy way.

The North Node is not destiny, it is not inevitable; it has to be worked on, consciously, though not always in the way we expect. Some paths are easier than others, depending on the unique birth chart and personal placements: an earth North Node for someone with a heavy earth chart may be easier, but throw in a fire placement squaring the nodal axis, or some difficult aspects to the North Node ruler, and you have some specific challenges to overcome. It all depends on the chart.

The Nodes of the Moon only change signs approximately every 18 months, so the signs are often shared with the majority of our peer group. What is specific, however - down to the precise minute of your birth - is the house where the North Node is placed. I have found that the house placement is often even more relevant to the individual’s struggles than the sign.

However, you’ll find information on the North Node through the houses lacking and at best, formulaic. Most house interpretations for the North Node only copy the interpretation for the ruling sign of that house rather than accurately explaining the specific challenges of the sign in that house. (Each sign is associated with a specific planet and house, and while these rulerships are essential knowledge in interpretation, they each represent distinct aspects.) In other words, most interpretations conflate the sign with the house rather than treating them as distinct.

To my knowledge there is no resource online or in a book that specifically interprets the North Node in each sign AND house. This is essential because a North Node in Capricorn in the 6th house is very different from a North Node in Capricorn in the 11th house, for example. And what about nodal inversions - when the North Node is placed in the opposite house from the one naturally ruled by its sign, as in a North Node in Capricorn in the 4th house? Each of the 144 combinations of sign and house requires a unique analysis.

That has been my goal in writing these guides. Understanding that there are deeply unconscious blind spots in our psyches and how to break through them to reach our highest, truest potential - to follow our karmic path of ascension - is how knowledge of our unique North Node placement, by sign and house, liberates us to reap the rewards of lifetimes.
