About

From Housewife to Handcrafter

I have always played with yarn. My aunt taught me to crochet when I was a little girl, and I spent many afternoons making terrible scarves or practice swatches, pulling them out and reusing the yarn until it was so frayed it tied itself into unsolvable knots at the slightest provocation. As I grew, I made baby blankets for family and friends, sticking to the traditional, the tried-and-true formula of soft yarn, soft colors, babyish patterns, and personally, I always found these projects to be insanely boring. Why not make it plaid? Put a bird on it! Make it in bright, fun colors; make it something you would actually stop to look at in a store, instead of drifting by and brushing it off as merely another pastel pink baby monstrosity.

When I had kids of my own, and as they grew, they began to develop little, unique personalities. I would look at my three very different children, and think, "why would we buy all these wonderful little people such boring clothes?" So my designs started as gifts for my children... hats with teeth, owls on everything, sparkly legwarmers, and fingerless gloves in every color. Other moms would see my kids wearing their awesome little one-of-a-kind creations, and ask me where I got them. The reactions to, "I made it myself" were widely varied, but always ended the same way: You should sell those.

It took me a good year to wrap my head around starting a business. Who was I to think that I could have a little shop of my own? I was a suburban Pittsburgh housewife. I ran errands and wiped runny noses. I wasn't an entrepreneur. It took the constant prodding of my husband for me to work up the courage to sign up here on Etsy for my own infinitesimal slice of Internet. Now here I am, one year later, selling hats with teeth, owls on everything, sparkly legwarmers, and fingerless gloves in every color, as well as rock-and-roll baby blankets, plaid afghans, and huge blankets covered in mhendi artwork to moms who think like I do. Why would you buy all the wonderful, unique people in your life such dull, predictable things? Spice it up! After all, it's Not Your Granny's Afghan anymore ;)
