Coffeehouse Pens
I began making fine hand crafted writing instruments in 1995, and thus began the wood turning addiction. I discovered the fun of creating functional art that would last for many years and be something that one could use and enjoy daily. After learning the art on easily available, exotic woods with inexpensive parts, I quickly realized that there were too many folks making the same type pens that I was, so I needed to kick it up a couple of levels.
I found that many pen makers made their pens with a noticeable “bump” where the wood joins the metal parts – I called those “speed bumps” because they were just jarring when you were enjoying the feel of the wood, and then you hit the speed bump! So the “upgrades” to my craft came early on. First was to learn to be so precise that there is no difference in the diameter of the wood from the metal parts. This gives the smooth continuous feel that you’d expect when you pick up the pen.
Speaking of the way they feel, they are so smooth, they feel almost like glass! Next, I realized that the inexpensive parts can have finish problems – the gold finish would actually wear off with the acidity of people’s hands (when you see "24k gold" in the description of some pens, you can likely assume that eventually you'll see some wearing of the gold plating depending on your body chemistry). So, I went looking for some better hardware. I found the style I liked – the classic, never goes out of style, look that you’ll love – but made from a virtually indestructible titanium gold finish that is billed as lifetime by the folks we get our hardware from. Next – the finish - I now have a finish process for the wood that will resist acidity as good as the finish on the parts do – you now have a pen that will be as beautiful for many years as the day you bought it! Antler in particular, if it's not stabilized, after a while your body chemistry will make it feel just nasty! We stabilize our material (wood and antler so they feel as good 15 years from now as they do today.

Owner, Maker
Inlaid pens came about from our dual love of making pens and being avid rockhounds. 20 something years ago we thought that we could combine the love of both. We have worked for years to perfect the technique - and never any two alike.

Richard
Inlay Master
Richard is the one who generally does the inlay, and now he has macula degeneration pretty bad. But in spite of very limited eyesight, he dons his “mega magnifier” and goes after it anyway - still doing an amazing job! Grab your's while you can.

I also have some great lapidary slabs for talented artists, as well as some beautiful turquoise nuggets for making stunning jewelry! Keep checking in!
I'm so glad you stopped by. I hope that my little corner of Etsy has something that you can't live without - either for yourself or for that perfect gift. Please come back often, I try to add new items fairly often.
Warmly,
Sharon
