Unlikely Team...that works

A formally trained artist with a passion for color and realism painting on the same canvas with an untrained artist with a love of pure monochromatic abstraction? Daniel Oldejans and Geoff Zalot began their collaborative effort in 2004, curious whether they would be able to approach a canvas together with divergent styles and philosophies of painting to create what would look like the uniform, cohesive work of a single artist. It worked! And for several years both artists worked collaboratively creating unified “free thought” paintings. In 2012 successor Todd West, and cousin to Geoff Zalot, took over Geoff’s half of the collaborative painter team. A move forced Oldejans and Zalot apart in 2011. With this new blood the cooperative team has evolved into a new brand of exciting and experimental works.

What further developed was a process of experimentation and interaction: layering, erasing, construction, deconstruction, criticism, support and ultimately consent. The process is much like “bowling” both artists are in the same room at the same time, working for the common goal of winning or in this case creating a satisfying work of art. Each artist takes turns painting on the single, usually large, canvas in front of them. No rules, no wrongs and no inhibitions. This technique has resulted in work, which accentuates the beauty not only of the creative process itself, but also of human cooperation.

The paintings produced by these two artists cannot be claimed by either. It is work, which can only be created by a third entity manifested during the collaboration, thus "OZ" is born. The results can be as surprising and delightful to the artists themselves as they are to any other viewer. Their hope is that the viewer enjoys the work at face value as well as the possible deeper meanings each piece might have for its viewer.
