About

This is our Happily Ever After.

We collaborated on Alivanna's wedding ring, and found that we were able to communicate through the whole design process better than we ever have with anyone else, ever. That sparked the idea that maaaaybe we could collaborate on making other things!

Liv has mad design skills, and Andross has goatloads of jewelry business and manufacturing experience. Liv can also code websites, make marketing graphics, and create pricing spreadsheets. Andross has crazy road show skills and sales experience. It all just came together beautifully.

OUR PROCESS

Our prototypes are either carved by hand in wax (by us, in the shop) using traditional craftsmanship, or designed in CAD (by us, in the living room). Our CAD designs are printed in our living room on a stereolithographic 3D printer. We then clean, clip, file, and patch the printed prototype until it meets our standards.

The prototype (either wax or resin) is then molded in our handmade mold frames. These cure overnight in our bathroom (the warmest room in the house) and then go out to the shop, where Andross carefully cuts them open. We then inject casting wax into the mold (waxes that do not meet our standards get recycled right back into the wax pot), and the best ones get cleaned up and sprued into trees, usually alongside several other designs. These trees are then invested in a plaster-like material and put into the kiln overnight to burn out the wax and cure the investment.

Then we melt the metal in a crucible, either in our electro-melt or by hand using a torch. The canister is removed from the kiln, set on the vacuum table, the molten metal is poured in, and when the button of metal at the base of the sprue tree darkens to cherry-red, we set it on the shop floor to cool while we repeat the process with any remaining cans in the kiln (we can fit about 3 at a time, and like to combine casts to save energy). Then the cans are quenched in a bucket of well water, and we scrub off the investment to reveal the cast metal tree.

The cast pieces are then clipped off the tree, and the tree base and any pieces that failed to cast are set aside to be melted down and recycled into a future cast. These are then close-clipped and the remaining nubbin of sprue is ground off. The piece then goes through several stages of rough polishing (and in some cases hand-painted with an oxidizing gel and seared with a jeweler's torch to set it), and finally polished to a mirror finish. Then it goes to the bench for stone setting or soldering, if further assembly is needed. The final piece goes through another quality check before going to the light box to be photographed and then into the inventory safe.

OUR VALUES

All the metal that we cast with is 100% recycled. Our shop is in our home and on 8 acres of woods. We're on well water and septic, so we are fastidious about keeping our process clean and creating zero impact on our environment.

Our packaging is made and printed domestically of domestic-produced materials. Our jewelry boxes contain 100% recycled boxboard which is the largest component of the box by weight; the total content of recycled paper is approximately 80% including coverings. The boxes are filled with a synthetic cotton that is guaranteed to not tarnish the jewelry while protecting it in transit.

Our printed materials, from our business cards to our trade show brochures, are all printed by a domestic company that uses vegetable based inks with low VOC emissions and offers paper options that contain up to 55% post-consumer recycled content.
