Announcement
Welcome! If you are interested in handmade pottery with an emphasis on gesture and movement, then maybe you'll find something you like here. Read more for "WHY NO FREE SHIPPING."
SHOP STATEMENT:
A good pot is every bit as expressive as the best painting or sculpture, plus functional ceramic art appeals to the sense of touch more than any other art form—a hot cup of tea in your hand, a cup of coffee to your lips.
SAFETY:
All the pots that are made to contain food or drink are food-safe, microwave-safe, and dishwasher-safe.
SHIPPING:
Priority Mail: 1-4 days.
Parcel Select: 2-9 days.
Pottery is heavy and fragile so shipping is always expensive. I use 200# test boxes, lots of foam and bubble wrap, double-box when necessary and take the time to pack so that you don't get a box full of shards. If you order more than one item the shipping charge may be off a bit. If you overpay I will refund the difference when the order ships. Check with me if you have any questions about shipping.
WHY NO FREE SHIPPING? First of all, there's no such thing as "free shipping". Shops that offer it just add the shipping to the price of the item. This is unfair because the cost of shipping depends on how far the item has to travel. I'm in Georgia. Shipping a pot that cost $19.71 to ship to California only cost $8.35 to ship to Florida. Obviously, If I add enough to the price of the pot to cover shipping to California I vastly overcharge customers who don't live on the West Coast. I've decided to offer a fairer, cheaper shipping. It is based on the actual cost of shipping but set so that the shipping you pay is usually a little less than the actual shipping.
INTERNATIONAL ORDERS:
I do ship internationally. You can find the cost of shipping in the store unless you live in a country that I do not ship to because of problems with delivery, customs or insurance or because other retailers have reported problems shipping to the country you live in (such as Italy, Russia, and Brazil). Shipping will be expensive because the over-packing necessary to avoid breakage adds weight to the package. If It turns out I can ship for significantly less than you were charged (likely if you buy several items) I will refund the over-payment.

Transcending The Functional
I am a studio potter in Lizella, Georgia. Most of the year I concentrate on functional pottery that hopefully transcends its functionality at least a little. These are the pots I sell on Etsy. Part of the year I concentrate on making pots that transcend the functional to the point that function takes a distant second place to expression. These are pots for shows and galleries.
Let's face it, a plastic pitcher is far more functional than a stoneware pitcher made by a studio potter. The plastic pitcher is lighter, transparent, has a flexible lid, doesn't drip, is dirt cheap and doesn't break. The aesthetic value of the wheel-thrown, handmade pitcher is the only thing it has to justify it costing thirty times more than the plastic pitcher.
Beauty is, as the saying goes, "in the eye of the beholder" and a search on Etsy is bound to pull up many pots that make even the cheap plastic pitcher look good, but we all shoot for beauty and sometimes hit fairly close to the bull's-eye. A good pot is every bit as expressive as the best painting or sculpture, plus functional ceramic art appeals to the sense of touch more than any other art form -- a hot cup of tea in your hand, a cup of coffee to your lips.
I studied pottery under Don Penny at Valdosta State in the early 70’s. In the mid-70’s I made a living in Colorado as a potter. My pots have been exhibited in the Denver Art Museum and galleries in Denver, Boulder, Santa Fe, Taos and other places. For several years I taught classes for the Denver Potters Guild. I stopped potting in the late '70's.
I started potting again in 2007 by firing the first pots I had made in over thirty years in Roger Jamison’s anagama near Juliette, Georgia. Since I ended my 30-year sabbatical I have been accepted in some of the most prestigious galleries and shows in the country and a collector for the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, California has purchased several of my wood-fired pots for a future permanent collection there.
In the '70's pottery was a job, now it is a passion.
