About

Meditative Art

Each one of my pieces starts with a grid - usually cut into eighths.

I try to visualize a design that compliments the form and shape of the vessel - but I usually end up doodling until it looks pretty.

I copy the image down on paper and make a clean trace, then apply it around the vessel.

You never know what a design will end up looking like when it's copied 8 times around the pot, but I suppose that's the ironic part of designing geometrically. You can draw the same thing 8 times and come up with something that looks completely different than you imagined!

Geometry is super cool.

After I get everything drawn on how I like it, I carve out all the hard lines. The reason I do this is so the viewer can see clean lines between colors - otherwise it gets really messy (trust me).

Then it's time to paint! I usually get about 2-4 square inches painted before I have to stop and burnish (depending on the intricacy of the carving). The reason I have to do this is because if I wait too long, the burnishing stone will scratch the surface of the paint instead of shining it up.
My pieces generally take twice as long to paint and burnish as designing and carving them. My largest piece to date took about 30 hours to paint.

Then it's into the electric kiln for a ~5 hour baking up to 1830 degrees Fahrenheit.

Finally, I do a second ultra quick firing by wrapping the pots in organic materials with certain chemicals and torching them. The result is the blue and red swirly, cloudy colors that you see on my vessels.

Welcome!
All of my earthenware pieces are purely decorative (they don't hold water). They should be cleaned with something dry and non abrasive - a feather duster or simple piece of cloth work well.
A lot of people ask what they should put in them. Dry flower arrangements look really nice in my vases, but it's totally acceptable for them to stand alone. They look great hanging out pretty much anywhere in your home.
These pots are fragile but can be handled if you make sure not to hold them by the rim or handles. They have an ultra smooth finish from being stone burnished that is quite pleasant to the touch.
